Stability Analysis of BRRI Varieties of Boro Amd Aman 2008-2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments are being conducted in the T. Aman and Boro seasons with BRRI released rice varieties since T. Aman 2012-13 and Boro 2013 in Gazipur and different regional stations. The number of varieties is 27 and 25 in T. Aman and Boro season respectively. The design used is RCB with three replications and the effective plot size (harvest area) is 5-x-2 m² leaving the boarder. Recommended crop management practices are followed. The newly developed stability model was used to analyse the data. In the reporting period BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan40 were found most stable in T.Aman season, while BR3 and BRRI dhan33 appeared to be unstable among the non-aromatic rice. In case of aromatic rice, BRRI dhan38 appeared to be most stable followed by BRRI dhan37. BRRI dhan29 was the only stable variety and BR6 appeared to be unstable in Boro season.

Objectives:

To standardize the model for stability analysis of BRRI varieties
To determine the stability index of BRRI released varieties
To maintain season, year and location-wise database on BRRI varieties.
To identify the bio-physical and socio-economic factors causing instability.

Methodology:

Experiments are being conducted in the T.Aman and Boro seasons with BRRI released rice varieties since T. Aman 2001 in Gazipur and different Regional Stations. In T.Aman season, the number of varieties is 20 and that in Boro is 22. The design used is RCB with three replications and the effective plot size (harvest area) is 5-x-2 m² leaving the boarder. Recommended crop management practices are followed. Stability analysis of the experimental data was performed following the new developed model in which: The stability of a genotype is determined by three parameters. A variety for which S_i is the minimum, d_ij ≥ 0 for all j and D_iis a positive maximum, is defined as the most stable variety among the alternatives: stable across the locations and over the years.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the non-aromatic T. Aman rice, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan40 were found stable from year to year although their stability ranks interchange between 1 and 2. BR3 and BRRI dhan33 appeared to be unstable. BR4 was found to have bellow average stability and all other aromatic T. Aman varieties appeared to show average stability. Among the aromatic T. Aman rice, BRRI dhan38 appeared to be the most stable followed by BRRI dhan37, while BR5 and BRRI dhan34 appeared to show bellow average stability. In Boro season, the only stable variety was BRRI dhan29 in each year. BR3, BR9, BR14, BR15, BR16, BR17, BR19, BRRI dhan 28 and BRRI dhan36 appeared to have average stability. All other Boro varieties appeared to have bellow average stability among which BR6 was the most unstable variety followed by BR2.
