Small Scale Duck Rearing in the Farmer’s Household

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rearing native ducks that are genetically poor yielder and provides negligible economic return to them. During the base line survey, it was observed that the people are very much interested about duck rearing due to the availability of water resources like pond or canal. Generally peoples follow local system of duck rearing without giving any extra care and feed. That’s why the productivity is low. To increase the total productivity and economic return, this development activity was undertaken at FSRD site, Chakhar and Boliarkathi under Barisal district. Results showed that the average egg production rate per farmer was 130 and 134 in Chakhar and Boliarkathi village respectively. Farmers’ were also interested for duckling production. The egg consumption rate was increased among family members and subsequently nutrition intake was also increased. Farmers’ were very much pleased for higher the egg production and the body weight gain rate.

Objectives:

Methodology:

To increase the total productivity and economic return, this development activity was undertaken at FSRD site, Chakhar and Boliarkathi under Barisal district during 2012. Each of the twelve selected farmers was provided with 6 Khaki Campbell duck maintaining 1:5 male female ratio. The routine works of vaccination are being followed regularly and natural feed are being fed ad-libitum. Egg production and body weight was monitored regularly. Each farmer was supplied one waterer for easy of medication. Technical supports along with treatment were also provided. Necessary treatments were also provided as per requirement.
