Studies on Curd and Seed Production of Cauliflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maximum yield of cauliflower (27.5 t/ha) was obtained by planting on 25 November in combination with 40 crr.x 30 cm spacing. Second highest yield (21.2 t/ha) was obtained from earliest planting of 5 September with 30 cm X 20 cm spacing. Consistently moderate yield was obtained from 15 October planting in all spacing treatments while planting on 10 January failed to produce any marketable curd. Combined application of cowdung and chemical fertilizers was effective in maximizing curd production. As regards seed production under polythene tunnel, planting on 5 September and 15 October produced 171.3 and 177.9 kg seed per hectare, respectively, while seed yield from 25 November planting was very low (51.8 kg/ha). In the open field condition, cauliflower plants from September to November plantings flowered profusely but they failed to produce seed.

Objectives:

To study the effects of date of planting and spacing on curd and seed production.
Study on the management of organic manure and chemical fertilizers for cauliflower curd and seed production.
Study on the prospect of using polythene tunnel as protection for seed production.

Methodology:

Experiment 1. Effects of date of planting and spacing on curd and seed production of cauliflower: One month old seedlings of cauliflower cv, Poushali were transplanted on four different dates viz. 5 September, 15 October, 25 November 1990 and 10 January 1991. In each planting date seedlings were transplanted in four different spacinqs viz. 30 cm x 20 cm, 40 cm x 30 cm, 50 cm x 40 cm Cowdung and chemical fertilizers were applied in the following proportions : 100% Cowdung 50% Cowdung +50% Chemical fertiIizers 149 and 60 cm x 50 cm. The experiment was carried out in randomized block design with three replications. There were two factors in the experiment viz. spacing and planting dates each with four levels. The size of unit plot for each treatment was 3 m x 2 m. Experiment 2. Effects of proportion and level of application of organic manure and chemical fertilizers on curd and seed production of cauliflower: One month old seedlings of cauliflower cv. Poushali were transplanted in the field on 28 November 1990 at a spacing of 60 cm x 50 cm, The experiment was laidout in randomized block design with three replications. The level of application and full doses of organic manure (cowdung) and chemical fertilizer were as follows: 25% Cowdung + 75% Chemical fertilizers 100% Chemical fertilizers. The experiment was laidout in randomized block design with three replications. There were two factors Experiment 3. Production flower seed under tunnel: of cauli polythene Seedlings of cauliflower cv. Poushali were transplanted under polythene tunnel on three different dates viz. 5 September, 15 October and 25 November 1990 at the spacing of 30 cm x 20 cm. The plots were 3 m fang and 1 m wide. There were two plots in each planting.
