Effect of Management Practices on Fruit Set, Preharvest Fruit Drop, Yield and Quality of Citrus Fruits

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results of an experiment conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh revealed that the application of irrigation water significantly increased fruit set and reduced fruit drop in both lime and lemon fruits. NPK fertilizers when applied at a low dose greatly increased the fruit set, reduced preharvest fruit drop and yield per plant. The fruit length and diameter also improved due to application of NPK fertilizers. Zinc when applied with NPK fertilizers further improved fruit set as well as the quality of both lime and lemon fruits.

Objectives:

The present experiment was, therefore, conducted to look at the effects of management practices on fruit set, fruit drop, yield and quality of citrus fruits especially Limes and lemons.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Citrus Garden of the Horticulture Farm of BAU, Mymensingh during the period from September 1990 to July 1991. About nine year old Lime and lemon plants were used for this study. There were six treatments including the control. The treatments were as follows: T₁- no NPK fertilizers+no irrigation + one weeding + no spraying per month, T₂- no NPK fertilizers+Z irrigations+ one weeding + one spraying per month, T₃- low NPK+2 irrigations+2 weedings + 2 sprayings per month, T₄- medium NPK+2 irrigations+ 2 weedings + 2 sprayings per month T₅ - medium NPK+Zn +2 irrigations +2 weedings+2 sprayings per month, and T₆- high NPK+Zn+2 irrigation- 2 weedings+2 sprayings per month. Low NPK means 400 g N, 300 g P₂O₅ and 250 g K₂0 per plant per year. Medium NPK means 800 g N, 600 g P₂O₅ and 500 g K₂O and high NPK means 1200 g N, 900 g P₂0₅ and 750 g K₂0 per plant per year. Zinc was applied @ 2 g per plant per year in the form of ZnO. Urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash 'were used as sources of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O, respectively. A basal dose of 40 kg of cowdung and 250 g of oil cake were applied to each plant. Triple superphosphate, oil cake and zinc were applied in full in the month of October 1990; urea and muriate of potash were applied in three equal splits in the month of October 1990. February 1991 and May 1991. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design with three replications. Data after collection were analysed statistically and the comparison of the treatment effects among the means was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The application of water and Zn significantly increased fruit yield per plant. In both the species of citrus the liberal application of NPK fertilizers in presence at Zn augmented the fruit yield per plant.
