Development and Evaluation of a Peg-type Dry Land Weeder for Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A peg-type dry land weeder for sugarcane was developed in Agricultural Engineering Workshop of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI), Ishurdi and its performance was tested in the sugarcane field of BSRI farm. Two types of soil: clay loam and loamy sand, were selected for testing the weeder. Performance was found better in the loamy sand soil than in the clay loam soil. Weeding efficiency and labour requirement per ha were 90.27% and 53.4 man-hr respectively in loamy sand soil at 13.56% moisture content while the weeding efficiency and labour requirement per ha were 88.23% and 77.92 man-hr respectively in clay loam soil at 16.24% moisture content. From the point of ease of operation the weeder was found easier in loamy sand soil than the clay loam soil. The fabrication cost of the weeder was estimated as Tk. 850.00.

Objectives:

(1) Development of a peg-type dry land weeder to be operated by two labours

(2) Testing performance of the weeder in the field.

Methodology:

The peg-type dry land weeder was fabricated in the Agricultural Engineering workshop of BSRI following the techniques with some modification and using locally available materials such as G.I. pipe, M.S. angle, M.S. flat bar, M.S. Sheet and cutting blade. The functional requirements of the weeder are: a) The front wheel with pegs on it is used to break the clod and loosen the soil. b) The cutting blade is used to cut grass on the ridge as well as on the two sides of the ridge. c) Two handles have been incorporated with the weeder so that two men can operate it. The weeder consists of a front wheel with pegs on it, one cutting blade, two handles and one frame for holding wheel, cutter & handles together. The main functional parts of the weeder are (1) Front wheel with pegs, (2) Cutter blade, (3) Handles and (4) Frame. The experimental investigation was carried out at BSRI farm in two types of soils: Loamy sand and clay loam. Two labours were selected from BSRI farm to test the performance of the weeder. The selected fields were irrigated adopting furrow irrigation method. After 7 days of irrigation, when the field seemed to be suitable for operation, the test was conducted and soil samples were collected for moisture determination. Thus 5 tests were conducted on 2 subsequent days with 3 replications on each soil type. The row length, row to row distance, depth of cut and width of cut were measured using cotton tape. Soil moisture content was measured by oven dry method. The pull/load and easiness of operation of the weeder could not be investigated due to lack of apparatus, and measurement of dry weight of the weeds cut was not considered for investigation.
