Genotype-pest Relationship on Lentii and Bean in Field and Storage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Investigations were made into the pests reaction to various genotypes of lentil and lablab bean in the field and laboratory during the fourth year of the study. Like previous three years this year (1990-91) the growing lentil plants of early maturity and high yielding genotypes were found to be more susceptible to major insect pests (Aphids and thrips) than large seeded genotypes, and none was free from the attack of these pests, Several indigenous and two exotic bean genotypes were tested against the incidence of insect and mite pests and some of them appearing as promising showed different degrees of susceptibility in the field; exotic beans were highly susceptible to aphids, thrips and pod borers. Although some of the indigenous genotypes seemed to be resistant to moderately resistant to major insect and mite pests, variation in the infestation level also occurred in four years study. This year, the pod damage caused by borer was considerably higher than first and second year but lower than third year. The hybrid beans resulting from the crosses of promising genotypes also showed little inherited effects of bean genotypes on the pest reaction. Laboratory study on the infestation level of pulse beetle to lentil seeds showed that none of the fifteen genotypes under the above three categories of lentil was free from the damage of pulse beetle and had similar damage level.

Objectives:

Studied in the field and laboratory against insect and mite pests with a view to examining their degrees of susceptibility to these pests and selecting promising tolerant lines of these legumes.

Methodology:

Four experiments were conducted on the pests attacking several genotypes of lentil and lablab bean in the field and laboratory during 1990-91. There were three experiments under- taken on pests of lentil and bean in the field and one experiment on lentil viz., early maturity, high yielding and large seeded ones were studied in 22, 13 and 20 genotypes respectively. The investigations were made on the population abundance of pests in three different plots, each for earl y maturity, high yielding and large seeded lentil plants in the experimental plots of Genetics and Plant Breeding Component of the project. Each genotype had four replicates. Population sampling on the pest incidence was made at weekly intervals 40 days after sowing; seeds were sown on November 25, 1990. The status of this experiment was that it covered every year of the four year tenure of the project. The observations were made following the methods of the previous years (Lewis, 1973 ; Anon., 1989). Genotypical incidence of major insect pests was studied in selected bean genotypes in the field. Twelve superior qualities of bean genotypes were grown in plots arranged in randomized block design with six replicates per genotype. The intensity of attack of three major insect pests such as aphid, thrips and pod borer was determined throughout the crop period. Aphid and thirps were counted in numbers attacking bean plants and the pod borer damage was measured dur ing podding stage. The incidence of three major insect pests to ten bean hybrids was. assessed in a separate experiment laid out in complete randomized design having two replicates per hybrid. The infestation level of aphid, thrips and borer was determined following the method of observation and data collection as indicated above. The extent of lentil seed damage by pulse beetle was studied on 15 genotypes out of 63 of early maturity, high yielding and large seeded categories under storage condition in the laboratory. There were three replicates per genotype and the experiment was laid out in CRD following the method of the study of insect pest in storage on seed (Sardar, 1990).

Exotic beans were highly susceptible to aphids, thrips and pod borers. Although some of the indigenous genotypes seemed to be resistant to moderately resistant to major insect and mite pests, variation in the infestation level also occurred in four years study.
