Impact of Rice Production Training on Knowledge and Capacity Building of Saaos

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 79 training courses were conducted for 2576 SAAOs of DAE since 2005-2009 and the duration of the course was one week. Data was collected from the participants through structured questionnaires during pre and post evaluation. The purpose of the study was to determine the knowledge and capacity building of the participants. The results indicate that the upper limit of the knowledge improve was 169% and the average improvement was 124%. Out of 2576 participants, 30% received distinction, 53% received satisfactory and the remaining 17% got the participatory certificate respectively. The findings indicate that the participants were keen interested to improved their knowledge. Moreover all of the participants mentioned that their confidence and ability for rice production was significantly increased by this training. Ultimately these improvements will positively response to increase the rice production of the country.

Objectives:

To determine the knowledge improvement and capacity building of the participants through imparted rice production training that will helps to increase the rice production of the country.

Methodology:

The study was conducted on one week rice production training course for SAAOs. A total of 79 courses had been conducted during the study period and the total number of participants was 2576. The course was designed covering all the important technologies. Emphasis was given on varieties, diseases insects, fertilizer, soil and water management. Almost equal number of theory and practical classes were included in those courses. In addition, review, group discussion and presentation sessions were also included. Best and experienced speakers from respected division were selected for the course. Three major components such as knowledge improvement, pre and post evaluation performance and capacity building of the participants was determined from this study. Difference between pre and post evaluation was considered as the indicator of knowledge improvement. The following three categories of certificates were given on the basis of the performance of the participants i.e. Distinction (80-100% marks), Satisfactory (60-80% marks) and Participatory (less that 60% marks). At the end of the course a structured form was supplied to the participants and requested to filled up the form. The main question in the form was To what extent you will be able utilized this knowledge with others, There are three level of range in the main question viz. 0-20%, 21-40%, 41-60%, 61-80% and 81-100% respectively. After the completion of data collection all the information complied and analyzed. Confidence level of the participants was determined on the basis of the question answers.

The overall improvement of the participants knowledge through rice production was 124% that signifying the need of the rice production training for the grass root level extension providers. Pre and post evaluation performance of the participants revealed that SAAOs were paid keen attention to acquire rice production knowledge. From the participants views, confidence level and capacity for the production was increased due to training. Knowledge improvement and capacity building status of the participants indicating for need of rice production training of SAAOs to work efficiently and advise the farmers for improved rice production.
