Stability Analysis of BRRI Varieties for T.aman and Boro Season 2003-2004

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments are being conducted in the T. Aman and Boro seasons with BRRI released rice varieties since T. Aman 2012-13 and Boro 2013 in Gazipur and different regional stations. The number of varieties is 27 and 25 in T. Aman and Boro season respectively. The design used is RCB with three replications and the effective plot size (harvest area) is 5-x-2 m² leaving the boarder. Recommended crop management practices are followed. The newly developed stability model was used to analyse the data. There exists strong "GxE" interaction for BRRI varieties – the varieties are more responsive to location environment in the Boro than in the T. Aman season. Besides geographical environment, performance of most of the BRRI varieties is largely dependent on the yearly weather fluctuations, particularly in the T. Aman season. No single T. Aman variety maintained its superiority in terms of yield across the locations and over the years. BRRI dhan29 maintained its superiority over other Boro varieties in most of the stations over the years and well adapted to all environments in Boro.

Objectives:

To standardize the model for stability analysis of BRRI varieties
To determine the stability index of BRRI released varieties
To maintain season, year and location-wise database on BRRI varieties.
To identify the bio-physical and socio-economic factors causing instability.

Methodology:

The regression coefficients used to measure the stability of varieties are unreliable due to poor to very poor fit of the regression model to the observed data in most of the cases. In the study, value of R², the indicator for testing the adequacy of the model fit, exceeded 50% only in 14% cases in T.Aman and 8% in Boro and it was less than 10% in 32 out of 58 cases in T.Aman and 39 out of 73 in Boro, for which regression coefficient was accepted as “1”. Thus the models that use the regression technique to determine the varietals stability like that of Eberhart and Russel is not out of question. A new approach that avoids the jargon of very sensitive tool like regression analysis is suggested for stability analysis of genotypes. A variety for which is the minimum and remains relatively stable across the location is the most stable variety among the alternatives.

Aman season, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan34 are the most stable varieties of which BRRI dhan34 is poorly adapted to all environments and BRRI dhan30 has the average adaptability. The unstable varieties are BR5 and BRRI dhan39 of which BRRI dhan39 is average adaptable to all environments and BR5 is poorly adaptable. BRRI dhan29 maintained its superiority over other Boro varieties in most of the stations over the years and well adapted to all environments in Boro. In the Boro season, BRRI dhan29 appears to be the most stable variety well adapted to all environments. The most unstable Boro varieties are BR6, BR8 and BRRI dhan35 of which BR6 and BR8 are moderate to poorly adaptable and BRRI dhan35 is moderately adaptable to all environments.
