Screening of Twenty Four Rice Genotype for Aman Rice Against Sheath Blight Disease (rhizoctonia Solani)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted to screen twenty four rice varieties against sheath blight disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani during T. Aman season in 2008 under field condition in Bangladesh. None of the test variety was resistance to sheath blight. The varieties BR25, BRRI Dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan46 were graded as moderately resistance. BR3 and BR11 showed susceptible reaction. BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39, BINA6 and Lal Sawrna were shorter in height and growth duration and photoperiodic insensitive. They were graded as highly susceptible to sheath blight disease.

Objectives:

To identify the varieties or cultivar resistant to rice sheath blight disease

Methodology:

A total of 24 rice cultivars were collected. Of them 20 were developed by BRRI and 4 by BINA. One variety Lal sawrna developed in India were used as susceptible check. Seedlings of each variety was raised in a seed bed separately. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in a single row (1.5 m length). The experiment was laid out following RCBD with three replications. A virulent isolates of R. solani was multiplied on sterilized rice grain hull mixture (1:3) in 2L conical flask. The flask was kept in the laboratory for two weeks at room temperature for growth of the pathogen. Approximately 6 gm of inoculum were placed at the base of rice hill (inside tillers) at maximum tillering stage and maintained standing water to created high humidity below the canopy for proper disease development. Fertilizer and cultural management were done as per BRRI recommendation. Severity of sheath blight was indexing on 0-9 scale. Where, 0= less than 5% area of blade and or sheath of 3rd leaf is affected, 3= more than 25% area of blade and/or sheath of 3rd leaf is affected or 5-25% area of blade and/or sheath of 2nd leaf is affected, 7= 5-25% area of blade and/or sheath of 1st (flag) leaf is affected. Based on severity indices the varieties were graded as resistance (R), moderately resistance (MR), susceptible (S) and Highly susceptible (HS), where severity index 0=R, 3=MR, 5=S,7= moderately susceptible and Greater that 9=HS

Achievement/Findings:

Non of the test varieties/cultivar showed resistant against Sheath blight disease. The disease is usually severe on cultivars that are short, high tillering ability, erect and compact in plant structure as compared to tall cultivars with few tillers.
