In Bangladesh, many people especially children and pregnant woman are used to suffer from malnutrition which might be caused due to deficiency of micronutrient specially zinc. Rice variety enriched with zinc may be a good source of zinc for those people who are suffering from it. Therefore, we have to develop zinc enriched rice variety which can give good yield with some other criteria. With this view, two micronutrient dense advanced lines: BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 along with BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan60 as checks were tested in 11 locations of Bangladesh during Boro 2014. Having the highest averaged yield (7.09 t/ha) among the advanced lines and check varieties, the tested entry BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 gave the highest yield, ranged from 6.61 to 8.10 t/ha, in 8 locations out of eleven. The trend of the highest yield of the above entry was observed in almost all locations except Sylhet and Rajshahi. BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 produced the highest yield (6.43 t/ha) in only one location (Rajshahi), having averaged yield of 6.50 t/ha which was higher than the check variety BRRI dhan28 (6.31 t/ha) but lower than the another check variety BRRI dhan60 which yielded 6.82 t/ha. The growth duration of the highest yielder BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 was 156 days which was 5 and 9 days longer than the check variety BRRI dhan60 and BRRI dhan28, respectively. BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 matured in 144 days which was the shortest among the entries. 1000-grain weight of BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 was the lowest (19.6g) among all the tested entries and check varieties, which indicates its fineness. On the other hand, 1000-grain weight (27.7g) of the highest yielder BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 indicates its boldness which was the highest among all genotypes. Most farmers preferred BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 for its higher yield, bold grain, lodging tolerant, green erect flag leaf and freeness from insect and disease attack. Farmers also preferred another tested entry BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 due to its shorter growth duration, higher yield, fineness of grain, attractive grain type and color. But it had shattering habit at maturity stage which might be a cause of dissatisfaction of the farmers in future.

  • To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of micro nutrient enriched advanced breeding lines at farmers’ field in different agro-ecological conditions.
  • To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.     

Two micronutrient dense advanced lines: BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 and BR7833-11-1-1-2-1-2B5 along with BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan60 as checks were tested in 11 locations such as West byde (BRRI Gazipur), Jessore (Zikorgacha), Chittagong (Hathazari), Comilla (Muradnagar), Jhalokathi (Sadar), Rajshahi (Godagari), Dinajpur (Sadar), Sylhet (Golapgonj), Faridpur (Modhukhali), Kishoregonj (Pakundia)  and Khulna (Dumuria) during Boro 2014. The unit plot size for each entry was 20 m2 (5 m x 4 m). Seeding time was 04 December, 2013 and the seedling ages were varied from 40-45 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 120: 20: 60: 20: 4 kg NPKSZn/ha. Days to flowering (50%) and maturity (80%) were recorded in time. Uniform management practices were all the locations. Plant height was measured from 10 randomly selected plants from center and four corner of each plot excluding border area. At maturity, panicles were counted from 1 m2 in each replication. From the center of each plot, 10-m2 area was harvested for determination of grain yield at maturity. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content, and expressed in t ha-1. Data gathered in the experiments were statistically analyzed using statistical software CropStat7.2 and means were compared with the least significant difference (LSD) test.

There is significant variation among the tested genotypes under different locations. Based on micronutrient (Zinc) enriched, higher yield, grain type, growth duration, non shattering habit and farmers’ opinion, the highest yielder line among the genotypes, BR7671-37-2-2-3-7 was recommended for Proposed Variety Trial (PVT)
