An experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati in a split plot design with 8 irrigation levels with or without mulch to determine optimum level of irrigation or mulch of dwarf French bean (Bushbean) variety (BARI Jharshim-2) during two consecutive cropping seasons from November to march of 2000-01 and 2001-02. straw mulch increased plant height, number of pods per plant, pod yield and profitability. Irrigation influenced significantly in all yield and yield attributes except size of pods and number of seeds per pod. The maximum number of pod (16.3/plant) and benefit cost ratio (5.03) was obtained from fortnightly flood irrigation with mulch while maximum pod yield (19.77 t/ha)) was obtained from half-weekly sprinkler irrigation. The lowest yield (10.87/ha) was obtained from control (no irrigation) without mulch.

i) To determine optimum irrigation levels to maximize quality, yield of dwarf  French bean. ii) To know the effect of mulch with different levels of irrigation and in water scarcity condition on French bean cultivation for higher pod yield of dwarf French bean in the Eastern Hilly Area of Bangladesh.

The experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Chandraghona, Rangamati hill district during November 2000 to March 2002. Raikhali, Rangamati is situated in the Southeastern part of Bangladesh (Latitude 22024’N and 91057’E Longitude). The experimental soil was silty loam with pH 5.5 having low organic matter (0.70%) and moderate (3.79 cm/hour) percolation rate. A split plot design was followed with 16 treatments under two factors. Factor “A” including 8 irrigation levels viz. I1= two flood irrigation (5mm)/week, I2= two sprinkler irrigation (3mm)/week, I3= one flood irrigation/week, I4= one sprinkler irrigation/week, I5= one flood irrigation/two week, I6= one sprinkler irrigation/week/two week, I7=Traditional or flood irrigation (6mm) at the wilting point, I8=Control or no irrigation and the factor “B” including straw mulch (M1) or without mulch (M2). The unit plot size was 2×5 m with 25×10 cm plant spacing accommodating 400 pits/plot. The land was manured and fertilized with compost, N, P2O5, and K2O @ 5000, 50, 75 and 60 kg/ha in the form of compost, urea TSP and MP. The entire amount of compost, TSP and half of urea and MP were applied at the time of pit preparation and rest was applied at 30 days after planting. Weeding, irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Irrigation was done by watering cane with shower for sprinkler irrigation and flood irrigation without shower. Data were taken from 20 randomly selected plants for individual plant performance and from one square meter for per hectare yield. The polynomial regression analysis was done and optimum dose of irrigation frequencies for maximum yield and economic yield were calculated from simple polynomial regression equations i e. Y =  +  1x +  2x2 (Zaman et al. 1982). Here x is the independent variable (Irrigation frequencies) and Y is the dependent variable (Yields and outputs). The optimum irrigation frequency for maximum yield is X = - 1/2 2 and economic Irrigation frequencies were Xe = X – (Px /Py) /2  2. Here, P x is the price of input (Irrigation cost) and Py is the price of the products.

There was no significant effect of irrigation in case of pod length and pod width. Straw mulch increased plant height, number of pods per plant and yield but showed no significant effect on pod length and pod width. The higher yield in mulching condition might be the cause that continuous moisture supply helps to proper supply of water and nutrient to enhanced growth of the plant.
