Effect of Storage System on Germination and Seedling Vigour of Bushbean Seeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during February 2001 to April 2003 by using six different storage materials viz. Brown paper bag, Polythene bag, Cotton bag, Earthen pot, Tin pot and Gunny bag at room temperature and at 5⁰C in refrigerator. Seeds stored at 5⁰C in refrigerator were good and their germination percentage and vigour were high. Seeds stored in sealed poly bag and tin pot at room temperature were also found good. Farmers can use sealed poly bag or air tight tin container for storing bush bean seeds.

Objectives:

To identify the suitable storage systems for better storage of bushbean seeds at farmer’s level in Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory of Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati during February 2001 to April 2003. Seeds were stored (500g seeds per packet) in April 2001 and 2002 in different packing systems viz. Brown paper bag, Polythene bag, Cotton bag, Earthen pot, Tin pot and Gunny bag and kept them for a year at room temperature and at 5⁰C in refrigerator. The seed germination was 100% at the time of storage. The moisture percentage of experimental seed was 12% in the first year (April, 2002) and 10.5% in the second year (April, 2002). Germination and vigor test were done by using 200 seeds from each packet in three replications were placed in the petridish every four months interval i.e. August, December, and April. The percentage of germination was calculated from the number of healthy seedlings germinated in each petridis, while unhealthy and partly germinated seeds were counted as ungerminated seed. Vigor index was counted as VI = (here, X= number of seeds germinated at the day). Germination percentage was analyzed through transformed data and original percentages were tabulated in the parenthesis.

Achievement/Findings:

After one year storage in refrigerator, almost all seeds except gunny bag storage, seeds had an acceptable vigour index (over 5) but in normal temperature only poly bag and tin pot storage, seeds remained near to 3.0 vigour index and the seeds of other storage systems had no germination at all. The rapid decline of germination and vigour index in perforated storage system due were to rapid respiration and physiological change of seeds under high (normal) temperature. The rate of respiration and physiological change in low temperature were slow that make the good germination and vigour after one year of storage in the refrigerator. In the refrigerator gunny bags were absorbed water from melted ice when the refrigerator was off due to failure of electricity that hampered the stored seeds in gunny bag storage even in low temperature caused lower vigour index (<3.0) From the result of the experiment it was revealed that Bushbean seeds needed to keeping in airtight package at low (5⁰C) temperature in order to keep them healthy. Farmers can use sealed poly bag or air tight tin container for storing bush bean seeds in natural condition.
