Modern rice varieties have been bred to respond to the best possible field conditions. However, the entries do not reach their maximum yield potential when nutrients, pest management and water are not optimal. But the green super rice requires low input and has multiple stress tolerance which is very much needed for our sustainable crop production. Therefore, five advanced lines: IR83140-B-11-B, SAGC-06, ZHONGZU 14, Weed tolerant rice and HUA 565 along with BRRI dhan44 as check  were tested in 9 locations during T. Aman, 2012 to get a suitable green super rice variety. Among the entries HUA 565 gave the highest grain yield in six locations out of nine locations having average yield of 4.69 t/ha. Yield performance of IR83140-B-11-B and ZHONGZU 14 were also good having average yield of 4.27 t/ha. Regarding growth duration, HUA 565 was found to be the shortest (110 days). Two entries IR83140-B-11-B and ZHONGZU 14 were also found to be matured within shorter duration (112-114 days). Although the standard check variety, BRRI dhan44 gave better average yield of 4.78 t/ha, its growth duration was very high (140 days). Other two entries, SAGC-06 and weed tolerant rice, although having shorter growth duration (110-115 days) but the yield performance was low (3.95-4.17 t/ha). The grain size of all entries except standard check BRRI dhan44 was slender having 1000 grain weight 21.72 - 23.81g. Among all entries HUA 565 had the lowest 1000 grain weight (21.72). The entry weed tolerant rice was highly preferred by rat in many locations compared to other entries and the reason of such preference by rat was not clear. Most farmers preferred HUA 565 for its better yield, shorter growth duration, less disease infection and also good grain quality with light aroma. In terms of good yield and shorter growth duration, IR83140-B-11-B, ZHONGZU 14 and weed tolerant rice were not bad, but disease infection was the main problem which could not attract the farmers.

  • To investigate the yield potential and adaptability of advanced breeding lines of green super rice characteristics at farmers’ field in different agro-ecological conditions.
  • To obtain feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.     

Five advanced lines: IR83140-B-11-B, SAGC-06, ZHONGZU 14, Weed tolerant rice and HUA 565 along with BRRI dhan44 as check  were tested in 9 locations West byde (BRRI Gazipur), Rajshahi (Godagari), Barisal (Sadar), Mymensingh (Bhaluka), Comilla (Muradnagar), Rangpur (Pirgonj), Kushtia (Sadar), Jessore (Sadar) and Chittagong (Hathajari) during Aman, 2012 to get a suitable green super rice variety. The trials were conducted in RCBD with 3 replications in each location. Unit plot size was 15 m2 (5m x 3m). Seeding time was 06 July, 2012 and Seedling ages were varied from 25-30 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 20 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 80: 18: 40: 10: 3 kg NPKSZn/ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT). Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary.Unit plot size was 20 m2 (5 m x 4 m). Seeding time was 05 December, 2013 and the seedling ages were varied from 40-45 days among the locations under varied circumstances. Seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 120: 20: 60: 20: 4 kg NPKSZn /ha. Days to flowering (50%) and maturity (80%) were recorded in time. Uniform management practices were all the locations. Plant height was measured from 10 randomly selected plants from center and four corner of each plot excluding border area. At maturity, panicles were counted from 1 m2 in each replication. From the center of each plot, 10-m2 area was harvested for determination of grain yield at maturity. Grain yield was adjusted to 14% moisture content, and expressed in t ha-1. Data gathered in the experiments were statistically analyzed using statistical software CropStat7.2 and means were compared with the least significant difference (LSD) test.

Based on the the important characteristics such as grain yield, growth duration, grain quality and farmers’ opinion, HUA 565 was recommended for proposed  variety trial (PVT) that might be released as green super rice.
