An experiment was conducted in a split plot design at the Agronomy field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during March to July 1994 to study the response of summer mungbean varieties Binamoog-2 and Kanti to Bradyrhizobium inoculation with 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg N/ha. Binamoog-2 performed better than Kanti in respect to early flowering, nodule production, percentage of mature pods, seed production and harvest index. Bradyrhizobium inoculation increased dry matter production, nodulation, pod production, seed yield, harvest index and benefit cost ratio in both the varieties. Nitrogen negatively affected on nodulation and harvest index. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer increased seed yield up to 40 kg N/ha and straw yield up to 60 kg N/ha. The maximum seed yield (1461 kg/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.18) obtained from when 40 kg N/ha was applied with Bradyrhizobium inoculation. Maximum straw yield (4702 kg/ha) was obtained at 60 kg-N/ha with inoculation.

i) To find the response of mung bean varieties to Bradyrhizobium inoculation with various N levels and ii) to find out the proper dose of  nitrogen with Bradyrhizobium inoculation for higher yield and profit.

The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications assigning variety in the main plots, Bradyrhizobium inocula in sub plots and nitrogen in unit plots at the Agronomy field Laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh during March to June 1994. The experimental land was Old Brahmaputra Floodplain under Agro-ecological Zone seven. The soil of the experimental plot was silty loam having pH 6.6 with 1.25% organic matter and 0.55% total nitrogen and 12 ppm phosphorus. A liquid mixture of three Bradyrhizobium inocula i.e. BINA MB 441, BINA MB 169, BINA MB 301 and five levels of nitrogen i.e. 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg-N/ha were included in the experiment. The unit plot size was 4.0x2.5m. Fertilizers were applied @ 60 kg P205 and 30 kg K2O from triple super phosphate and muriate of potash respectively. Liquid mixture of three Bradyrhizobium inocula was mixed with the seeds before sowing and nitrogen was applied in the form the urea following the treatments of the experiment at the time of fertilizer application. Seeds were sown on March 12, 1994 maintaining 40 cm line to line and 10 cm plant to plant spacing. A pre sowing irrigation was given to ensure the proper germination because a drought condition was prevailed before the seed sowing. No irrigation was required after germination due to sufficient rainfall in the cropping period. The intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching etc. were done as and when necessary. No control measure was taken, as the crop was not affected by severely insect pest infestation. Data on nodulation and dry matter production was collected at 60 days after sowing. At 80% maturity of pods, the crop was harvested on June 12, 1994, and data on plant height, number of branch/plant, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, 1000 seeds weight, seed and straw yield etc. were taken and subjected to statistical analysis following the M-STAT program. Duncan’s multiple range test was done as and when necessary. The polynomial regression analysis was done and optimum dose of nutrient elements for maximum yield and economic yield were calculated from simple polynomial regression equations i e. Y =  + 1x +2x2. Here x is the independent variable (nutrient element) and Y is the dependent variable (yield). The optimum dose of nutrient element for maximum yield is X = -1/22 and economic dose were Xe = X – (Px/Py)/2x2. Here Px is the price of input (nutrient element) and Py is the price of the products.

The maximum seed yield (1607 kg/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.35) was obtained from Binamoog-2 at 40 kg N/ha with Bradyrhizobium inoculation and it was minimum (995 kg/ha, 1.61) from the variety Kanti in absolute control. The maximum straw yield (4724 kg/ha) was obtained from Binamoog-2 at 60 kg N/ha with inoculation and minimum (3112 kg/ha)) was obtained from the same variety in absolute control.
