Effect of Planting Time and Spacing on the Yield Performance of Bushbean (phaseolus Vulgaris L.) in the Eastern Hilly Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati in split plot design with six spacing and three planting time of dwarf French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) during the period from October, 1998 to March, 2000. Earlier (October, 15) planting took longer time for flowering and fruiting while late planting (December, 15) gave early flowering but number of pod and pod yield decreased. Wider spacing gave higher number of pod and pod yield per plant but closer spacing gave higher number of pod and pod yield per unit area. The highest yield (24.16 t/ha) was obtained from 25x10cm spacing of mid-November planting. Plant height, number of branch, foot & root rot disease infestation was higher in earlier planting and was minimum in late planting.

Objectives:

To select the suitable spacing and time of planting for higher pod yield of dwarf French bean in the Eastern Hilly Area of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Chandraghona, and Rangamati during the period from October 1998 to March 2000. Raikhali, Rangamati is situated in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh (Latitude 22024’N and 91057’E Longitude). Split Plot Design was followed in the study with six spacing arrangement in sub plots and three planting time viz. mid-October, mid-November and mid-December in the main plots. The unit plot size was 6 x 1.5m accommodating 200, 300, 240, 360, 300 and 450 pits per plot in the spacing arrangement of 30x15, 30x10, 25x15, 25x10, 20x15 and 20x10 cm respectively. The land was manured and fertilized with Cowdung, N, P₂O₅, and K₂O @ 10000, 50, 75 and 60 kg/ha respectively. The entire amount of Cowdung, TSP and half of Urea and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation and rest was applied at 30 days after planting. In the study Frenchbean line PVH001 was used. It is a very high yielding line selected from the evaluation of 170 local and exotic lines. It is a semi-determinate, dwarf, bushy type plant having profuse bearing habit of narrow, straight and round pod which are suitable to used as fresh bean and dry seeds. Two seeds per pit were sown maintaining the treatment spacing and kept one seedling per pit after thinning at 15 DAS. Weeding, irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded from 20 randomly selected plants for individual plant performance and from total plot for per hectare yield. Data on all characters were statistically analyzed as per standard procedure to assess the result.

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum plant population (45.33/m2) was observed in the closer planting (20x10cm) in late (December 15) planting while it was minimum (17.83) in the wider spacing (30x15 cm) of 15 October planting. Maximum plant height (25.9cm) and number of branch (5.17/plant) was obtained from 30x15 cm spacing in the October planting while it was minimum (21.0cm, 4.01) at 15 December planting with 20x10 cm spacing. The highest fresh pod yield (24.16t/ha) was obtained from November planting with 25x10 cm spacing which was statistically similar with 20x15 cm (23.02t/ha) and 20x10cm (22.75t/ha) spacing in the same planting time. It was minimum (12.97t/ha) in December planting with 30x15 cm spacing. Maximum seed yield (1.99t/ha) was obtained from 25X10cm spacing of 15 November planting and it was minimum in 15 December planting with 30X15 cm spacing. From the above discussion it was revealed that the optimum spacing of dwarf French bean is 25x10cm and early planting gave higher yield and seed production in the valley of Eastern Hilly Region of Bangladesh.
