Rice cultivation in tidal submergence non-saline ecosystem covers a vast area of 10 districts in southern coastal region. The area is subjected to tidal flooding with varying depths of water. The tidal range varies from a few centimeters to several meters. Sometimes rice plant is totally submerged by tidal water for hours. Traditional T. Aman rice varieties like Sadamota and Dudkalam, having taller seedling height with low yield, are widely cultivated in Barisal region. Taller seedling as well as tall plant height with submergence tolerance is prerequisite to survive rice plant in this ecosystem. Average seedling height, which is an very important factor for the survival of rice plant in tidal non-saline ecosystem, of all the tested advanced lines ranged from 64-74 cm which was longer than the check variety BRRI dhan44 (54 cm). Seedling height of BR7941-41-2-2-2-4, BR7941-30-1-1-1 and BR7941-116-1-2-1 was about 70 cm which was very identical to that of check varieties Sadamota and Dudkalam. Having the highest average grain yield (4.34 t/ha) among all the tested advanced lines including check varieties, BR7941-116-1-2-1 produced the highest grain yield ranged from 2.33 to 5.20 t/ha, in all the locations except Patuakhali (Dumki). Ranging from 1.90 to 4.20 t/ha yield, the tested entry BR7941-41-2-2-2-4 gave the 2nd highest average yield (3.76 t/ha) which was identical to that of check variety BRRI dhan44 (3.70 t/ha) but higher than the local check varieties Sadamota (3.33 t/ha) and Dudkalam (3.38 t/ha). Yield performance of BR7941-1-1-2-1 was the lowest (3.30 t/ha) followed by BR7941-30-1-1-1 (3.59 t/ha) that was statistically similar yield to the check varieties BRRIdhan44, Sadamota and Dudkalam. Mean growth duration of the advanced lines ranged from 145 to 151 days, whereas it was 140 days for Dudkalam, 147 days for BRRI dhan44 and 164 days for Sadamota. Most farmers preferred BR7941-116-1-2-1 for its tall seedling height, higher yield, shorter growth duration than Sadamota and bold grain type. Some farmers also preferred BR7941-41-2-2-2-4 for its tall seedling height, better yield, and shorter growth duration.

  • To evaluate the yield potential and adaptability of tidal submergence tolerant advanced breeding lines at farmers’ field in tidal submergence prone area.
  • To get feedback information about the advantages and disadvantages of the advanced lines from farmers and DAE personnel.

Four advanced lines BR7941-1-1-2-1, BR7941-41-2-2-2-4, BR7941-30-1-1-1 and BR7941-116-1-2-1 along with BRRI dhan44, Sadamota and Dudkalam as checks were tested at farmers’ field in eight locations such as Barisal (Sadar), Barisal (Bakergonj), Patuakhali (Sadar), Patuakhali (Dumki), Jhalokathi (Sadar), Jhalokathi (Nolchiti), Borguna (Betagi) and Pirojpur (Sadar) during T. Aman 2014. The selected field was a representative T. Aman area where tide usually comes at regular interval. The trials were replicated thrice in each location. The unit plot size for each entry was 18 m2 (6m x 3m). Seeding time was 16 July, 2014 and seedling age for transplanting was around 40 days in most of the locations without some exceptions due to some local unavoidable situation. Seedlings were transplanted at 20 cm x 20 cm spacing. Fertilizers were applied at 90: 15: 50: 12: 3.6 kg NPKSZn /ha. All fertilizers except urea were applied as basal and urea was applied in 3 equal splits at 15 DAT, 30 DAT and 45 DAT. Other standard management practices were followed as and when necessary. Appropriate measures were taken to control insect pests. Date of seeding, transplanting, flowering and maturity, seedling and plant height, lodging tolerance, pest and disease incidence, phenotypic acceptance at vegetative and ripening stage, yield and yield components were recorded. Feedback from farmers and DAE personnel were also recorded. For yield estimation, 10 m2 sample area from each plot was harvested at maturity and grain yields were adjusted to 14% moisture content.

Based on seedling height, grain yield, grain size and growth duration, BR7941-116-1-2-1 (entry no.4) and BR7941-41-2-2-2-4 (entry no.2) were recommended for proposed variety trial (PVT) for non saline coastal environment.
