DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE PATUAKHALI SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY DUMKI, PATUAKHALI

The study was conducted in thirty selected nurseries of Patuakhali, Pirojpur and Barguna districts of Bangladesh during January to December 2010 for assessing the horticultural potentiality, socio-economic aspects and feasibility of nursery industries in the central coastal region of Bangladesh. Carefully designed interview schedule was used to collect objectives based information. Most of the nurseries were established during 2000 or later where increasing trend of farm size was observed compared to their time of establishment. Through the primary investment of maximum nursery owners (53.33%) were medium (5000 – 25000), positive symbol was that they invested the initial establishment cost from their personal interests and own sources (43%). Among the collections, horticultural plant species consist of 72% of the total species. The annual earnings from horticultural seedling/saplings were the highest (72%). Management techniques regarding profitable nursery business by majority of the nursery owners were better to best.  Majority of the nursery owners followed layout during nursery establishment (96.67%), had year round working plan (83.33%). Majority propagated in rainy season (July – Aug.) for successful propagation. Maximum owners used low saline canal water (43%), watering cane for supplying water (33%), and drainage (96.67%) for proper water management. Plant nutrients management was also remarkable but management techniques regarding modern nursery facilities of the nursery owners were poor.  Majority of the nursery owners used IMP techniques (83.33%) but 96.67% had no tissue culture knowledge. Maximum nursery owners were middle aged (53.34%), medium educated (53.33%) and medium cosmopolite (56.67%). For these reasons, most of the nursery owners earned medium (TK. 76-175000) annual income (40%). High salinity, tidal bore and environmental disaster were the major constrains regarding profitable nursery enterprises. Ensured quality seedling/sapling (1st), proper monitoring by Govt. and Non –Govt. organizations (2nd) and proper management of soil-water (3rd) might solve the problems. Therefore, Horticultural potentiality, socio-economic aspects and feasibility of nursery industries in the central coastal region of Bangladesh are great demanding and badly needed. However further studies may be made with increased number nurseries in the central coastal region of Bangladesh.

1.To determine horticultural potentiality and feasibility of nursery business in the studied nurseries.

2.To identify the categories of nursery owners with their socio-economic gain from nursery business

3.. To recommend problems based solutions regarding efficient, eco-friend and profitable nursery enterprises in the central coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Three districts of central coastal region of Bangladesh were selected for the study. The Study on Horticultural Potentiality and Socio-Economic Aspects of Nursery Industries in the Central Coastal Region of Bangladesh was conducted in some selected nurseries of Patuakhali, Pirojpur and Barguna districts of Bangladesh during January to December 2010.In order to collect relevant information, an interview schedule was carefully designed keeping the objectives of the study in view. The questions were drafted in Bengali. The draft interview schedule was pre-tested before finally used for data collection to examine the suitability of different questions and statements included in the interview schedule. Expert opinions were also taken to ensure effectiveness of the interview schedule. The final (English) version of the interview schedule was done on the basis of validity suggestions, corrections and comments of research supervisor and experts.

Primary data collection

Primary information was collected through semi structured questionnaire survey and among those thirty nurseries was selected from three districts of central coastal region of Bangladesh on the basis of ration total.

The selected nursery owners were interviewed to collect information on the following aspects-

  1. Identity of the nurseries: The specific locations along with their short descriptions of thirty nursery owners/respondents are shown in the

Statistical measures such as range, range order, mean and standard deviation were used in describing the variables of the study. Description of statistics such as frequency distribution and percentage were also used for data analysis.

Most of the nurseries in central coastal region of Bangladesh were richer with horticultural species and were most benefited through the selling of horticultural seedlings and saplings. Though there were some limitations regarding modern survey facilities, most of the nursery owners were good to better in different management techniques regarding successful nursery business. Having personally interested, most of the nursery owners primarily invested medium amount from their own sources. This medium investment return them medium annual income and low annual profit. If more invested then more annual income and profit can be possible. High soil salinity, tidal pore, disaster and frequent rainfall and drought were the major constrains which can be solved through the proper and effective monitoring by Govt. and Non. Govt. organizations regarding profitable nursery enterprises in the central coastal region of Bangladesh. Therefore, horticultural potentiality, socio-economic aspects and feasibility of nursery industries in the central coastal region of Bangladesh are great demanding and badly needed. However, further studies may be made with increased number of nurseries and districts of the central coastal region of Bangladesh.
