The survey work was conducted on the population structure of the plant species available at PSTU campus during July-October, 2011.The survey was conducted to ascertain plant population of Patuakhali Science and Technology University campus. Data were collected through complete enumeration. Firstly, the university campus was divided into five blocks. In each block species wise plants were counted using the standard format.
The five study blocks were denoted by A, B, C, D and E. The blocks are listed here:
Block — A - Sher-E-Bangla Hall area
Block — B - Kabi Begum Sufia Kamal Hall area
Block — C - Academic area
Block — D - Administration area
Block — E - Agricultural farm area
In each block, species wise plant population are counted physically, grouped according to their types, calculated, summarized and finally presented in different tables in the chapter Results and Discussion. The related information viz. local names, english names, scientific names, families, growth habits (herb, shrub, tree) and major uses (bases of groupings) of each species were taken into account. Plants were grouped into 5 types according to their major utilities: fruit, medicinal, palm, ornamental, and forest species. The entitlement of those species were calculated, summarized and finally, offered in different tables alphabetically (family) and discussed in the episode ‘Results and Discussions’. Moreover, the tables were set in such a way that those suit easy to access and finally, become users’ friendly. The computerized data base of the plant population has been developed using the Microsoft Visual Studio Software to provide the facility of entering and modifying data in a very users’ friendly interface. There are several ways of querying for information and similarly, there are many ways of generating customised reports on the detail information on species with local name, English name, scientific name, family, habit, use, number, etc.
