Use of Solar Energy as Seed Treating Agent to Control the Seed Brone Fungi of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experimental to control seed borne fungi of rice with solar energy was conducted at the Department of plant pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural Unniversity, Mymensingh. For that matter, rice seeds of BR11 were dried by spreading on concrete floor, brown paper and in mixture with coarse sand (50:50) for different period viz. 0, 4, 8 and 12 hrs. Total seed borne infections were found lowest when the seeds were dried with sand mixture followed by concrete floor and brown paper. Considering the length of drying, 12 hrs. was best among others. Seed vigor was gradually found while the seeds were dried with the sand mixture for 12 hrs. It was also observe that decreasing of total seed borne infection with the increase of mixture for 12 hrs. under clear sunshine before sowing would be help for inhibition the seed borne infections of fungi as well as increasing the seed vigor.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of solar heat for controlling the seed borne fungi of rice and
To identify the suitable seed drying technique that would be most effective to reduce the infection and increase the seed vigour

Methodology:

Seed samples of BR11 were collected from the farmers of Boyyra village under Mymensingh district. The seeds were the dried through solar heat treatment by three different ways (a) spreading the seeds thinly on brown paper, (b) seeds mixed with equal volume of coarse sand (50:50) and (c) seeds just spreading on concrete floor. The samples were dried under clear sunshine starting from 11:00 to 15:00. 30gm of seed samples were taken and divided into 3 groups for 4, 8 and 12 hrs. drying period. For more than 4 hrs drying period, the seed samples were dried for consecutively 2 and 3 days. The temperature was recorded with the thermometer. All the seed samples were assayed for the presence of fungal pathogen following blotter method. When identification was difficult under the stereoscopic microscope, temporary slides taxonomic books, whenever necessary. Vigor index of seed samples were determined on the basis of seed germination and it was calculated by the following formula. Sterilized sand was used as germination media. Vigour Index (VI) = (no. of seed germination at 1 st count)/(Days of 1 st count )+(no. of seed germination at 2nd count)/(Days of 2nd count)+(no. of seed germination at last count)/( Days of last count). The collected data of different parameters were analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C package programme. The means for all the treatments were calculated and analyses of variance of all the characters studied were performed by F test. The significance of the difference among the means was calculated by LSD (Least Significant Difference).

Achievement/Findings:

The present findings revealed that growth of all major seed borne fungi significantly inhibited by solar heat treatment. As a result the vigour of the seeds increased.
