The objective of the study is to determine the character contribution towards divergence in BRRI- released Aman rice varieties. The experiment was conducted in Aman season of 2003 with 15 modern varieties (MVs) of rice namely BR3, BR5,  BR10, BR11, BR22, BR23,  BR25, BRRI Dhan30, BRRI Dhan31,  BRRI Dhan32,  BRRI Dhan33, BRRI Dhan34, BRRI Dhan37, BRRI Dhan38 and BRRI Dhan39 following RCB design with three replications. Mahalanabis D2  method was applied. Contribution of yield was 3.8% and that of plant height, flag leaf area and tiller no/hill was the same and very small (1%). Thus days to 50% flowering is the largest contributor (70%) to the variety divergence followed by 1000 grain weight (23%). The closer pair of T. Aman varieties is (BR11, BRRI dhan30) followed by (BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39), while the distant pair is (BR3, BRRI dhan34) followed by (BRRI dhan23, BRRI dhan34).

  1. To determine the character contribution towards divergence in BRRI- released Aman rice varieties
  2.  To identify the factors causing similarity and diversity among the genotypes

The experiment was conducted in Aman season of 2003 with 15 modern varieties (MVs) of rice namely BR3, BR5, BR10, BR11, BR22, BR23, BR25, BRRI Dhan30, BRRI Dhan31, BRRI Dhan32, BRRI Dhan33, BRRI Dhan34, BRRI Dhan37, BRRI Dhan38 and BRRI Dhan39 following RCB design with three replications. The plot size was 18 m2 with plant spacing of 20 x 20 cm. Standard crop management practices were done to maintain normal crop growth. From each plot 6 m2 was identified during maximum tillering stage for grain yield and rest 12 m2 area were used for taking other necessary data including destructive sample. Ten plants were randomly selected for measuring the plant characters:  plant height, number of panicles per hill, filled grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight.  Flag leaf angle and flag leaf area were calculated from middle most and longest tiller flowering just after the complete emergence of the panicle sutured crop was harvested and grain yield was calculated at 14% moisture content Mahalanabis D2 determines the distance between any two varieties based on common characters measured on each variety. Contribution of each character towards divergence was calculated taking under consideration of all combinations. Each character was ranked on the basis of the different value for each combination and thus rank-1 was given for the highest value for each combination. To classify the BRRI varieties, at first eight characters were considered and their contributions towards divergence were assessed. The characters showing the null or almost null contribution were excluded one by one and reassessed the contribution. In such way character contribution assessment were done with 8, 7 and 6 characters separately. In all cases, Mahalanabis D2 was calculated and distant and closer pairs were identified.

This program concluded that % filled grain/panicle and flag leaf angle did not contribute to the varietal divergence and that the contribution of flag leaf area was very negligible when all eight plant characters were included in the analysis. Days to 50% flowering was the major contributor (70.4%) to the varietal divergence followed by 1000-grain weight (22.8%). Contribution of yield was 3.8% and that of plant height, flag leaf area and tiller no/hill was the same and very small (1%). Thus days to 50% flowering is the largest contributor (70%) to the variety divergence followed by 1000 grain weight (23%). The closer pair of T.
