Performance of Some Local Varieties at Different Salinity Levels Under Net House Condition in T. Aman Season.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A major cropping pattern in the coastal areas of Bangladesh is fallow -T. Aman-fallow. The field remains fallow due to high salinity throughout the year except the rainy season. Salinity is also varied with locations. Salinity tolerance depends on growth stage, salinity level and duration of salinity. There are two modern saline tolerant varieties which are tolerant at the reproductive phase for T. Aman season. But more saline tolerant varieties with desirable characteristics are needed. An experiment was conducted in Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701 during T. Aman season in 2007. Four local varieties namely- Chikiram, Ashfal Balam, Capsule, Ashfal and Pokkali (tolerant ck.), 1R29 (susceptible ck.) and three salinity levels viz. 0, 4, 6 dS/m were considered for this experiment. Significant reduction was observed in both 4 and 6dS/m among the tested varieties. Considering the results it can he concluded that three local varieties namely Ashfal, Chikiram and Capsule are tolerant at 4 dS/m as like as tolerant ck. Pokkali. But at 6dS/m Ashfal performed better compared to other tested varieties.

Objectives:

To determine the yield performance of rice varieties at different salinity levels through out the whole growth period.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Physiology Division, BRRI during T. Aman season in 2007. Four local varieties viz. Chikiram, Ashfal Balam, Capsule, Ashfal and Pokkali (tolerant ck.), 1R29 (susceptible ck.) were considered for this experiment. Perforated plastic pot (2kg) lined with cotton fabricated bags were used for the study. Then the pots were filled up with powdered soil fertilized with 50N, 25P, 50S and 25K mg/Kg of soil. Pots were placed inside a bucket as water baths. Three to four pre-germinated seeds per pots were seeded. Two weeks after seeding seedlings were thinned to one per pot and the water level was raised to about 1cm above the soil surface. Three salinity levels viz. 0, 4, 6 dS/m were considered for this experiment. After 21 days of sowing, plants were salinized by raw salt (NaCl) at different salinity levels. After maturity plants were harvested and yield and yield components were taken. This experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design with 4 replications.

Achievement/Findings:

Filled grain was reduced in all tested varieties except Ashfal under saline condition of 4 dS/m compared to control. The reduction, however, was varied with varieties and salinity levels. At 4dS/m it was slightly higher compared to control in Ashfal. The reduction was little in Pokkali followed by Capsule, compared to others. The reduction was significant at 6dS/m in all varieties except tolerant ck. Pokkali.The saline conditions significantly reduced grain yield compared to the control conditions. The reduction percentage was the highest in sensitive check 1R29 followed byAshfal Balam at 4 dS/rn and they could not survive at 6dS/m salinity level. At 4 dS/m salinity Pokkali, Ashfal, Chikiram and Capsule showed below 50% reduction compared to control.
