Adaptation of Fao Temperature Method for Estimating Reference Crop Evapotranspiration (et0) Under Bangladesh Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The estimation of crop water requirement is one of the principal steps in the planning, design and operation of irrigation and water resources systems. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations recommended the Penman-Monteith (P-M) method to calculate reference crop evapotranspiration. The FAO also suggested for data-short environment to calibrate the FAO alternative methods with P-M method. We optimized the coefficients (adjustment factor) of FAO temperature method with P-M method for different regions of Bangladesh. The coefficients determined herein provide a simple yet accurate way of estimating evapotranspiration (ET₀). This approach is useful for un-instrumented areas where irrigation schemes are operated. Considering the paucity of the climatological data and the lack of knowledge and facilities to use more sophisticated methods/tools in estimating ET₀, the temperature method with derived coefficients is recommended as a superior method for estimating the reference evapotranspiration.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to determine the coefficient of FAO temperature method for estimating reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) in different regions of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Eight different stations located at different representative regions (and also agro-ecological zones) of the country were selected for study. Monthly mean weather data (from 1948 to 2001) was collected from Bangladesh Meteorological Department. The ET₀ values were calculated using a software package ‘ET₀’, developed by Katholic University of Leuven, Belgium. In P-M method, the model parameter angstrom coefficients a_s and b_s were taken as 0.25 and 0.50, respectively, as suggested by FAO (Smith et al., 1992).

Achievement/Findings:

The coefficients for FAO temperature method for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ET₀) from measured temperature alone, are presented. Considering the problems associated with the availability and reliability of climatological data and possible errors in the more sophisticated methods for estimating crop water requirements, the FAO temperature method along with the coefficients developed is recommended as the simple and practical method for estimating reference evapotranspiration.
