Design and Construction of Water-table Indicator for Geo-hydrologic Studies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ground-water resource must be kept in dynamic equilibrium considering the combined effect of withdrawal and recharge. For why groundwater level data of a geo-hydrologic unit is of immense use. In this study, a water-table indicator (rewind type) was constructed for this purpose. The cost of the instrument is cheep enough for use at farm level. The water-table indicator was found to be simple and easy to operate. It is light weight and extremely portable for field operations by semi-skilled staff, hence facilitate to use at agricultural farm for water management and irrigation planning purposes.

Methodology:

Principle: This is an electromechanical device to measure depth of water level from ground surface. The measuring electrode can be lowered down in the well by hand driven mini drum. As soon as the electrode contracts with water, audio beep sound is generated on the surface. The corresponding depth can be read from the cable.

Main components: Cable, Audio alarm, and/or bulb-indicator, meter.

For convenient, audio alarm and meter (indicate the presence of water by reflecting the dial) both can be included in WL recorder. Other accessories such as rewind mini drum, battery (for audio alarm) and a stand are required.

Construction: The rewind drum was made by cutting the 6 inches diameter plastic pipe. Audio alarm was set within the hole of the rewind drum and the drum was closed by PVC plate. At one side (outer side) of the plate, indicating lamp was set and provision was made to replace the battery of the alarming system by opening the plate (through screw system). The stand is made of one-inch diameter GI pipe. The drum was connected to the stand by bearing system. A handle/arm was provided with the stand to rewind the cable in the drum. Indicating lamp indicates whether the battery is functioning or not. A copper load was attached at the end of the cable to keep the cable straight. Other material, such as lead may be used to serve the same purpose. A plastic tube was used as housing of the end point of the cable and load, and also to avoid deformation of the cable due to collision with pipe. A hole was made in the upper part of the plastic tube to remove the air when immerged in water.

The constructed water-table recorder (and the data of water-table to be recorded) can be used for multipurpose studies. For determination of correct depth to water-table, it is essential that the cable remains straight when inserted to well. For this, the diameter of the rewind dram should be such that it keeps the cable without bending or torque effect. The graduations of the cable also determine the accuracy of the measurement. In this study, graduation at 10 cm interval was provided. The intermediate position should be measured by small scale. The cost of the instrument is cheep enough for use at farm level. The water-table indicator was found to be simple and easy to operate. It is light-weight and extremely portable for field operations by semi-skilled staff, hence facilitate to use at agricultural farm for water management and irrigation planning purposes.
