A Profitability Study of Pond Fish Culture in Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study clearly indicates that pond fish culture of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) was highly profitable. The survey study was conducted at three unions namely Sakua, Boilor and Amirabari in Trishal upazila under Mymensingh district of Bangladesh in 2009. The average total cost of pond fish production (per hectare per year) was Tk'. 59813.57 while gross income and net retum were Tk.145324.67 and Tk. 85511.10 for all locations. In 3 unions total costs (per hectare per year) were Tk. 56945.67, Tk.64123.76 and 58371.30 in Sakua, Boilor and Amirabari, respectively and their corresponding net return was found to be the highest in Boilor (Tk. 91647.24) and lowest in Sakua (Tk.78866.33). The annual per hectare net rerun in the study area which were Tk.78866, Tk. 91647 and Tk. 86019 at Sakua, Boilor and Amirabari. The benefit cost ratio (undiscounted) was the highest for Amirabari (2.47); followed by Boilor (2.43) and Shakua (2.38). The average BCR for all locations was 2.43. Net return per taka invested was also of the similar trend. This is due to the lowest cost of production and moderate return form fish in Amirabari though the highest return was also observed in Boilor. The pond fish production was more profitable in Amirabari compared to that of Boilor and Sakua.

Objectives:

To investigate the comparative economic picture of production of fish pond at different locations of Mymensingh district

Methodology:

A survey was conducted at three unions namely Sakua, Boilor and Amirabari in Trishal upazila under Mymensingh district of Bangladesh in 2009. Finally three unions, Sakua, Boilor and Amirabari were selected for collection of data due to pond fish farmers were heavy concentrated in that area ccommercial fish farming, Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) has been conducting poverty alleviation programme in this area by extending credit and technological information to pond fish farmers. Before collecting the data a list of the owners of fish ponds was collected from the BRAC office. Twenty culture ponds were selected randomly from each of the three unions for interviewing the pond fish farmer to fulfill the objectives of the study. Thus, the total numbers of sample ponds were 60. Before preparing the final interview schedule a draft interview schedule was developed keeping in view the objectives of the study. Then it was pre tested in the study area by interviewing the staff of BRAC office and some pond fish farmers. The data and information were collected in respect of operation and activities involved in ponds fish production and economic returns for one-year period form January 2009 to December 2009.

Achievement/Findings:

The average stocking rate of all species was 8758 pieces per hectare per year and their cost was Tk. 4072.94. The average amount of human labour use for all locations and all operations was 182.16 man-days per hectare. Total cost of human labour for all locations and all operations was 10930.00. The average amount of feed (Rice bran, Oil cake, Duck weed and Green grass) used for all locations was 8032 kg and their cost was Tk. 17967.80. The average amount of fertilizer (Urea, TSP, Lime) used for all locations was 890.34 kg. Total cost of fertilizer for all locations was Tk. 7043.33. The average amount of manure (cowdung) used for all locations was 9866 kg and this cost was Tk. 4932.83. For all locations, per hectare per year total cost was Tk. 59813.57. The fingerlings, human labour, feed, fertilizer, manure, land use and interest on operating capital was the major cost items and their corresponding contributions were 6.81 percent, 18.27 percent, 30.04 percent, 11.78 percent, 8.25 percent, 22.19 percent and 2.66 percent of the total cost of pond fish production for all locations. It was observed that artificial feed cost was the largest cost and it contributed 30.04 percent of total cost. The average yield of pond fish production for all locations was 3743 kg. The average gross income was Tk. 145324.67 and net return was observed Tk. 85511.10 for all locations.
