Analysis indicating the socio-economic changes of respondents shows that some respondents reported small changes happened in their socio-economic conditions and maximum respondents reported that after joining the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC)'s livestock programme their socio-economic conditions remained unchanged. The average cultivated owned  land of the participants of milch cow rearing and beef fattening were 32.39 and 28.88% respectively. The average annual incomes of farm families participating in milch cow rearing and beef fattening prgrammes of BRAC were estimated at Taka. 44353.73 and 56463.33 respectively. The average annual income of beef fattening programme participants was higher than milch cow rearing participants during the study period. The finding suggest that one crucial problem of livestock raising is the higher feed cost particularly for the rural poor. The rearing of milch cows was more profitable than beef fattening bulls.

To look into the socio economic characteristics of the milch cow rearing and beef fattening farmers and the problems and constraints of BRAC's Livestock Credit programme and to suggest policy measures for appropriate livestock development.

The study was conducted at Birampur, Jotbani and Katla Union of Birampur Upazila under Dinajpur district. In Birampur Upazila there are seven unions from which Birampur, Jotbani and Katla union were selected purposively due to most of the BRAC's activities were concentrated in this area. A preliminary survey was conducted in 5 villages namely; Chandpur, Begampur, Ketra, Dhaudpur and Uttra Horirampur from 3 unions of Birampur Upazila under Dinajpur district. The study area was based on availability of loanee of the livestock programme of BRAC for rearing milch cow and beef fattening bull. On the basis of loan size, farmers were classified in to three groups like small farm <Tk. 6000), medium farm (Tk. 6000-8000) and large farm (> Tk. 8000). A total of 30 milch cow owners and 20 beef fattening bull owners were randomly selected from the listed 56 milch cow owners and 42 beef fattening bull owners respectively. Out of selected 30 milch owners the small, medium and large farms were 19, 6 and 5, while these were 13, 4 and 3 for beef fattening bull, respectively. The time period for data collection was started from January, 2010 and completed by 50 days. Before starting actual tabulation the responses were carefully checked and verified. Tabular method was used for profitability analysis. Acquisition cost has been measured by the purchase price of milch cow with calf and beef fattening bull. Feed cost was one of the major cost items for rearing milch cow with calf and beef fattening bulls, cost of feed included expenses on paddy straw, green grass, wheat, bran, oil cakes, lali, urea and salt that were calculated according to the average prices actually paid by the respondents. Home supplied feed costs were also calculated according to the average to the average prices.tfrepreciation cost family labour and hired labour were considered for this study. 2The BRAC charged interest at the rate of 15% per annum on its loan. Returns included the sale value of milch cow with calf and beef fattening bull, values of milk, cow dung and returns from ploughing and threshing. The sale value was measured of the expected price of milch cow and bull. Where, Depreciation cost=Original value-salvage value/life of the asset; 2 Cost of operation capital= Cash expenses x rate interest x study period/2 and 3Dependancy ratio = Total no of the family /Earning member of the family.

The average family size of milch cow rearing programme participants was lower than that of beef fattening programme participants. About 23% of family members of milch cow rearing programme participants were illiterate while there was about 18% illiterate members of beef fattening programme participants' family. The results of the analysis also show that bout 40% of the total active respondents of milch cow rearing programme participants were engaged in milch cow rearing as their main occupation. On the other hand, about 40% of the total respondents of beef fattening programme participants were engaged in beef fattening as .their main occupation. The average cultivated waned land of the participants of milch cow rearing and beef fattening were 32.39 and 28.88% respectively. The average annual incomes of farm families participating in milch cow rearing and beef fattening prgrammes of BRAC were estimated at Tk. 44353.73 and 56463.33 respectively. The average annual income of beef fattening programme participants was higher than milch cow rearing participants during the study period. The present study also identified some constraints to and potentials of increasing milk and meat production in the study area. The major problems faced by the respondents were (a) non-availability of grazing land, (b) inadequate supply of feed and fodder, (c) high price of concentrated feed and fodder (d) lack of institutional credit facilities, (e) lack of veterinary care and services and (f) lack of adequate extension services and technical knowledge. The owners of milch cow and bee fattening bull suggested some measures to overcome the above problem. The remedial measures they suggested were (a) increasing grazing land, (b) supply of adequate feed by government at subsidized price, (c) supply of institutional credit on easy terms, (d) ensuring adequate veterinary care and services and (e) adequate extension services and training. The finding suggest that one crucial problem of livestock raising is the higher feed cost particularly for the rural poor. Furthermore, cow owners suffer from inadequacy of livestock credit. In land tight situation in Bangladesh, the scope of horizontal expansion of land is not possible. The small and marginal farmers can, however, attain substantial income gains by adopting dairy farming as a supplementary enterprise. The following recommendations are made for the poverty alleviation of rural poor and the increase in milk and beef production in this country. The rearing of milch cows was more profitable than beef fattening bulls.
