The costs and returns were determined in order to compare the profitability of rearing a milch cow and a beef fattening bull. Total costs per milch cow rearing annually were estimated at Taka 11268.27, of which cash and non-cash expenses shared 77.51 and 22.49% respectively and in the case of beef fattening bull that were at Taka 9937.04, of which cash and non-cash expenses covered 70.69% and 29.31 % respectively. The annual gross returns from rearing a milch cow and a beef fattening bull stood at Taka 13575.45 and 11580.50 respectively. The annual sale value of a milch cow with calf and annual sale value of a beef fattening bull shared 59.87% and 56.0% of their respective gross returns. The average milk production per milch cow was 300 liter. The average return milk production per milch cow was Taka 3000 per location period of 150 days and its share in gross return was 22.10%. On average per day return from milk was Taka 20 and per day milk yield from a milch cow was 2 liter. The annual average net returns above gross costs and cash expenses were Taka 2307.18 and 4840.93 respectively for rearing a milch cow. On the other hand, annual average net returns above gross costs and cash expenses stood at Taka 1643.46 and 4556.44 respectively for rearing a beef fattening bull. The returns per Taka invested were estimated at Taka. 1.21 and Taka. 1.16 for rearing a milch cow and a beef fattening bull respectively. Analysis indicating the socio-economic changes of respondents shows that some respondents reported small changes happened in their socio-economic conditions and maximum respondents reported that after joining the BRAC's livestock programme their socio-economic conditions remained unchanged.

To determine the profitability of livestock credit taken by the loanee farmers of BRAC

The study was conducted at Birampur, Jotbani and Katla Union of Birarnpur Upazila under Dinajpur district. In Birampur Upazila there are seven unions from which Birarnpur, Jotbani and Katla union were selected purposively due to most of the BRAC's activities are concentrated in this area. A preliminary survey was conducted in 5 villages namely; Chand pur, Begampur, Ketra, Dhaudpur and Uttra Horirampur from 3 unions of Birampur Upazila under Dinajpur district. In these villages, agriculture is the major occupation of most of the villages. The study area was based on availability of loanee of the livestock programme of BRAC for rearing milch cow and beef fattening bull; accessibility and good communication system and expectation of co-operation from the respondents so that reliable data might be obtained. On the basis of loan size, farmers were classified in to three groups like small farm ( Tk. 8000). A total of 30 milch cow owners and 20 beef fattening bull owners were randomly selected from the listed 56 milch cow owners and 42 beef fattening bull owners respectively. Out of selected 30 milch owners the small, medium and large farms were 19, 6 and 5, while these were 13, 4 and 3 for beef fattening bull respectively. The time period for data collection was started from January, 2010 and completed by 50 days. Before starting actual tabulation the responses were carefully checked and verified. Tabular method was used
