Impact of Micro Credit Towards Socio-economic Upliftment of Rural Women by Goat Farming

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Socio-economic Research division (SERD), Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, Dhaka from a sample of 50 women credit respondents under "Narchar Mahila Somity" during 2007 to assess the impact of micro- credit towards socio-economic upliftment of women beneficiaries. Positive impact of micro- credit was observed on income, housing, sanitary, household assets, food consumption and women empowerment etc. After utilizing the credit, additional 20% and 6% of respondent able to build-up better quality of house (tin-shed) and latrine (semi-pucca) and also 18%, 30%, 38%, 14%, 18%, 18%, 32% and 22% of respondents were able to purchase table, chair, bed, almira, television, radio, watch and heater respectively than before. About 60% women were increased their empowering capability after introducing with the credit program.

Objectives:

To analyze the socio-economic upliftment of rural women after micro-credit intervention.

Methodology:

For achieving the objectives of the study Narchar, District Comilla was selected for data collection where 261 members of "Narchar Mahila Somity" were given training on "Community Based Goat Production by Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) and credit facilities were provided by different banks to those trained members for goat production. The list of the community based goat farmers has collected from the Office of "Narchar Mahila Somity" located in that area and respective loan giving agencies. From the list 50 loan recipient goat farmers have selected for interview following a random sampling technique. Data were collected using the pre-designed pre-tested interview schedules. Qualified and trained field investigators collected data from goat farmers on socio-economic status. The survey was confined during 2007. Detailed data on occupation, income, food, housing, consumption, household assets, etc. of farmers were collected. Data were cross-checked with the credit records of the corresponding banks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools like mean, percentage. The assessment of micro-credit on loan recipient farmers was assessed by a situation "without" research (pre-project) against "with" research (post-project) comparison. After tabulating, impact assessment was carried out using pre and post-project comparison. Collected data was analyzed by using Microsoft Excel Programme.

Micro-credit programme for goat farming has positive impact on the socio-economic status of the women borrowers under Narchar Mohila Somity. All evidences implied that provision of micro-credit facilities on goat production need expansion in other parts of the country to reduce rural poverty through women activities.
