A total of 14 different species of insect pests was found to attacked in cabbage at Hill Agricultural Research Station (HARS) Khagrachari, Bangladesh during November to February, 1991-92 and  1992-93 cropping  seasons. Among these, cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae Lin.),  cabbage borer (Hellula undalis Fab.), cabbage semilooper (Plusia orichalcea Fab.), tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura Fab.), diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella Lin.), aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae Lin.), and cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon Hufnagel), were considered as the major pest. Among the recorded insects of cabbage, six insects were leaf feeders, three were sap suckers and the remaining five were either head borer or leaf cutter or leaf miner or leaf webber. The maximum damage caused by the major insects was recorded on 40-65 days after planting (DAP) in both the years.

  Cabbage

To record different  insect pests of cabbage, its incidence, nature of damage, population density and status at the hilly region of the country.

The incidence and status on insect pests of cabbage was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station (HARS) Khagrachari, Bangladesh during November to February ,1991-92 and  1992-93 cropping  seasons. The cabbage , variety Atlas-70 was grown in 6 m x 1 m plot with a spacing of 60 cm and 50 cm between pots and rows, respectively ,(I,e.20 plants per plot). After eight days of planting (DAP) weekly data on the incidence of insect pests attacking cabbage and its population density along with the number of infested plants and nature of damage were taken. The data were recorded from 8 to 78 days after planting (DAP) in both the cropping seasons. Different growth stages of insect pests were collected by hand or sweeping nets. Aphid population was measured as number per cm2 of cabbage leaf and the population of leafhopper was measured as number per plant. Other insects were counted visually from the plant. Collected insects were reared in the laboratory, preserved, and graded as major and minor on the basis of the level of population density and nature of damage.

A total of 14 different species of insect pests was found to associated with cabbage. Among these, cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae Lin.),    cabbage borer (Hellula undalis Fab.), cabbage semilooper (Plusia orichalcea Fab.), tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura Fab.),diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella Lin.), aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae Lin.), and cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon Hufnagel), were considered as the major pest. But cruciferae leaf webber (Crocidolomia binotallis Zell), cabbage bug (Murgantia histrionic Hahn.), epilachna beetle (Epilachna 12 punctata Mulsant), Leafhopper (Nephotettix bipunctatus Fab.), grasshopper (Aractomorpha crenulata Fab.), leaf miner (Phytomyza harticola Goureau) and beetle (Phyllotreate cruciferae Goeze) were of minor importance. Among the major pests, the cabbage butterfly exhibited the maximum population Its densities were 241.85 and 149.15 per 100 plants during 1991-92 and 1992-93, respectively. And these parameters were 10.00and 8.35 per 100 plants for cutworm. The maximum population of aphids 90.89 per cm2 leaf) was recorded in 1992 and its was reduced to 0.33 per cm2 leaf in 1993. Among the minor insect pests, the population density of flea beetle was the lowest (8.55 and 6.55 per 100 plants) in both the years. The cabbage butter infested 100 percent plants in 1992 and 805 in 1993. In both the years 100% plants were also infested by aphids. Populations of both the major and minor insects were higher in 1991-92 than 1992-93. Among the recorded insects of cabbage, six insects were leaf feeders, three were sap suckers and the remaining five were either head borer or leaf cutter or leaf miner or leaf webber. The highest population ( 48.37 per 20 plants) of cabbage butterfly was recorded at 58 days after planting (DAP) which declined sharply afterward and continued up to the last harvest. But the peak population of aphids was recorded on 35 days after planting in both the years. The incidence of diamond back moth and tobacco caterpillar began at 23 DAP at the head formation stage and peak at 58 DAP. The incidence of cutworm on seedling started from 10 DAP and continued 35 DAP and the peak population of cabbage borer was recorded at 63 DAP.
