The resistance of three  species of mustard Brassica  rapa, B. integrifolia, and B.  napobrassica to the aphid Lipaphis erysimi  (Homoptera: Aphididae) was studied in 1997 and 1998. The peak aphid population of  Brassica  rapa,  B. integrifolia, and B.  napobrassica were 42-64, 82-85, and 45-58 aphids per plant, respectively in the 1st and 2nd weeks of February at the premature stage of the crop in 1997 and 1998 crop seasons. All the B.  napobrassica entries suffered significantly lower aphid infestation (20.44 aphids/plant) and thus considered to be the moderately resistant. Whereas B. integrifolia suffered comparatively higher aphid infestation (30.09 aphids/plant) and considered to be highly succesceptible to aphids. Entries of  Brassica  rapa also showed moderately resistant to aphid infestation (22.98 aphids/plant). The entries M-27, PT-303, BC-2692, Jun-3023, RYS-1 and Nap-8901 were found less aphid infestation and gave better yields as compared to other entries.

To know the incidence of aphids on mustard crop and to study the resistance of different varieties and entries of three mustard species to aphid infestation

The experiment was conducted at the Oilseed Research Centre. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute , Joydebpur Gazipur during  the 1996-97  and  1997-98 crop seasons. Three species of Brassica were used for the test. These were B. rapa-two varieties ,viz , Tort -7 and Dhali (BARI Sarisha-6) and five entries viz. BC-1592. BC-2592, BC-2692, M-27 and PT-303: B. integrifolia- one variety , Daulat and three entries., viz ,jun-2792 and jun-3023; B. napobrassica-one variety, BARI Sarisha-7 and three entries ,viz .Nap-179, Nap-8901 and RYS-1. The seeds of each of these varieties and entries were sown in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications each. The seeds were sown on 20th November 1996 and 1997 in plots each measuring 2 x.5m with spacing 30 x 5 cm. Recommended agronomic practices were followed uniformly. Ten mustard plants infested naturally with aphids were randomly sampled from each plot. The top 10 cm apical twig of these infested plants were cut off and brought to the laboratory in polythene bags separately. The aphids were removed from the plants with the help of a soft brush and placed on a piece of white paper. Then their numbers were counted. This observation was started from 3rd January (flowering stage) and continued up to 21st February (pod maturity stage) during both the crop seasons at seven day intervals, The percentage of plant infestation was recorded by counting the infested  and healthy plants from 10 randomly sampled plants from each replication. The days to flowering (75%), Days to maturity and seed yield were also recorded. Finally, the data for the two years were computed and mean aphid population and per cent infestation of different entries were calculated. The temperature and relative humidity were recorded.

Aphids were observed on the three species of Brassica species in the  2nd week of January at the flowering stage 940-50 days after sowing, DAS) and continued up to the 3rd week of February  at the premature stage  (60-85 DAS) in both the study years. The highest aphid population (60-85 and  57-84 aphids/plant ) was observed on the mustard crop in the Last week of January to 2nd  week of February in 1997 and 1998. Comparatively lower aphid population was observed in 1998 than in 1997 in the three Brassica species. A significantly increasing trend of the aphid population was observed in the crop up to second week of February. In the later part of the crop growth aphid population was comparatively higher in B. integrifolia  and B. napobrassica than in B. rapa. Temperature had a positive correlation on the aphid population whereas relative humidity had a negative correlation. Among the 15 mustard varieties and entries, none of them were completely resistant to the attack by the aphids. In B. rapa, the lowest aphid population (20.24 aphids/plant) was recorded in the entry M-27. In B. integrifolia, Jun-3023 suffered the lowest aphid (28.35/plant). In B. napobrassica the variety BARI Sarisha-7 harbored significantly the lowest aphid infestation (18.24/plant). The results revealed that B. napobrassica and B. rapa had comparatively lower aphid population (20-22 aphids/plant) than the cultivar B. integrifolia (30.09 aphids/plant). Such information was useful for developing mustard varieties suitable for Bangladesh.
