Variability and Correlation Studies in Summer Mungbean (vigna Radiata)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Quantitative assessments of the genetic variability and interrelationships among the yield and its components were evaluated on 30 cultivars of summer mungbean. Significant variation was observed in most of the characters studied except in number of pods/plant and number of seeds/pod. Variation due to location as well as genotype x location interaction was significant in case of days to 50h. flowering, plant height, number of fruit clusters/plant, number of pods/plant and grain yield/plant. The highest genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations were found in grain yield/plant. Seed size showed the highest heritability value followed by pod length and plant height. Simple correlation study indicated that seed size, pod length, number of fruit clusters/plant, number of branches/plant and number of pods/plant were the most important attributes of grain yield. The partial and multiple correlation studies also indicated that seed size contributed more towards the grain yield/plant in summer mungbean.

Objectives:

To assess the genetic variability in respect of various characters and also to estimate their relationships in a summer mungbean collection .

Methodology:

Thirty genotypes of summer mungbean were grown in a randomized block design with three replications at two locations ego BINA farm, Mymensingh and Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj during 1982. Each plot consisted of two rows of 4m length. The row-to-row and plant-to plant distances were 60cm and 5cm, respectively. Five plants were picked up randomly from each plot. Data for ten characters ego i) days to 50% flowering, ii) days to maturity, iii) plant height (cm), iv) number of branches/plant, v) number of fruit clusters/plant, vi) number of pods/plant, vii) number of seeds/pod, viii) pod length (cm), ix) seed size and v) seed yield/plant (g) were recorded. Analyses of variances were performed from pooled data for analyzing data of two environments. Achievement/Findings:

It was observed from multiple correlation that whenever seed size was used in calculating correlation coefficients along with other characters, higher values were obtained. This indicated that seed size contributed more towards the grain yield/plant in summer mungbean and this character should be given top priority in selecting a genotype from a germplasm or from a segregating population hybridization or mutation induction.
