A field experiment was conducted at the Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj with N rate in presence of incorporated groundnut crop residue on T. Aus and T. Aman rice during Kharif seasons of 1999 and 2000. The treatments of the experiment were five N rates (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 kg/ha) in presence of incorporated groundnut crop residue (GR) along with an absolute control (no residue and no nitrogen). Two year pooled data indicated that plant height, number of tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and thousand-grain weight increased with the increase of N rate along with incorporated groundnut crop residues. An average higher grain yield (5.00 t/ha) was obtained from GR+60 kg N/ha in T. Aus rice. But in T. Aman rice higher grain yield (4.69 t/ha) was obtained from GR+80 kg N/ha. Grain yield of T. Aus rice in different treatments was 32.04-61.81% higher than the control but in case of T. Aman rice it varied from 22.58-89.11 %. The highest gross return (Tk.76, 355/ha) and gross margin (Tk.69317/ha) was found in GR+N80 but the higher MBCR was in GR+N60 due to less cost involved in this treatment. Application of higher doses of N increased the uptake of N, P, K, S and Zn with negative balance of N, K and a positive balance of P, Sand Zn.

To find out the effects of fertilizer N and its optimum rate for rice after incorporation of groundnut crop residues.

The experiment was conducted at the Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj during 1999 and 2000. The soil of the experimental field was silty loam in texture with pH 6.56, organic matter content 1.42%, total nitrogen 0.084%, available phosphorus 24.0 ppm, available potassium 44.0 ppm, available sulphur 11.0 ppm and available zinc 0.27 ppm. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with three replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 4m. Five N rates (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 kg/ha) with incorporated groundnut crop residue (GR) along with a control (no residue and no nitrogen) were tested on T. Aus rice and T. Aman rice cropping system. Thus, the treatments of the experiment were: i) GR + N0; ii) GR + N20; iii) GR + N40; iv) GR + N60; v) GR + N80 and vi) GR0 N0 (absolute control). Green crop residues of groundnut (cv. Jhingabadam) were incorporated into the soil before transplanting of T. Aus rice @ 31.0 t/ha. T. Aus rice (cv. BR 26) was followed by T. Aman rice (cv. BR 11). Groundnut crop residues were chopped into small pieces and spreaded on the individual plots. The residues were incorporated into the soil by spade and foot pressing. In T. Aus rice and T. Aman rice fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60-20-33-10-4kg N P K S and Zn/ha and 80-20-33-10-4kg N P K Sand Zn/ha, respectively. All the fertilizers were applied as basal except N fertilizer. Nitrogen (as urea) was top dressed in three equal splits at seedling, tillering and panicle initiation stage. Rice seedlings of 35-40 days old were transplanted at spacing 20cm x 15cm. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. T. Aus rice and T. Aman rice seedlings were transplanted during 22 May and 22 August 1999 and harvested during 11-19 August and 27 November- 6 December 2000, respectively. Yield data were collected from an area of 1m x 3m. For yield contributing characters, ten plants were collected randomly from each plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were adjudged by LSD. Cost benefit analysis was done on the basis of prevailing market price of input and output.

For sustainable yield of T. Aus and T. Aman rice, incorporation of groundnut crop residue and application of additional N is desirable. The economic N rate after incorporation of groundnut crop residue for moderate resource based farmers would be GR+N20 and for the high resource based farmers GR+N80. Application of higher doses of N increased the uptake of N, P, K, S and Zn with negative balance of N, K and a positive balance of P, S and Zn.
