Effect of Younger Seedling and Planting Density on the Growth and Yield of Rice Planted in System of Rice Intensification (sri) Method.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the West Byde farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Joydebpur in Boro season, 2000-2001 to study the effect of seedling age and seedling density on the growth and yield attributes of BRRI dhan29 in System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method. Three seedling ages viz, 10, 15 and 20 day-old seedlings were planted in 40cm× 40cm spacing with three seedling densities viz, 1, 2 and 3 seedlings hill^-1. Planting densities did not differ significantly for most of the growth and yield parameters of BRRI dhan29 except effective tillers hill^-1 and 100 -grain weight. However, apparently the highest grain yield (6.67 tha^-1) and (6.63 t ha) were obtained from 2 seedlings hill^-1 and 3 seedlings hill^-1 respectively. Effective tillers hill^-1, grain yield, straw yield, 1000-grain weight and harvest index of the studied variety was significantly influenced by seeding age. The highest grain yield (6.95 tha^-1) was obtained due to 20 day-old seedlings and the lowest (6.32 tha^-1) one was from 10 day-old seedlings. Harvest index (1.12%) was also the highest in 20 day-old seedlings. The interaction effect of the seedling age and seedling density showed significant effect on plant height, effective tillers hill^-1, number of spikelets panicle^-1, grain and straw yields, 1000 grain weight, sterility percentage and panicle length. However, the highest effective tillers hill^-1 (38.50), splkelets panicle^-1 (145.4), grain yield (7.18 tha^-1), 1000- grain weight (21.17 g) and harvest index (1.18%) were obtained due to the interaction of 20 day-old seedlings and 2 seedlings hill^-1.

Objectives:

To study the effect of seedling age and seedling density on the growth and yield attributes of BRRI dhan29 in System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the West Byde of BRRI Farm, Joydebpur during Boro season 2000-2001. The experiment comprised of three seedling age viz, 10 , 15 and 20 day-old seedlings and three levels of seedling densities viz 1, 2 and 3 seedlings hill^-1. The experiment was conducted using Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with three replications. The unit plot size of the experimental plot was 4.0m×2.5m. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plot as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 270-130-120-70 and 10 kg ha^-1. Whole amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc suphate were applied prior to final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 45 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). Rice (cv.BRRI dhan29) seedlings were transplanted on 25th December 2000 with 40 cm×40cm spacing. All other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield contributing characters were collected from five randomly selected plants and grain yield was recorded from an area of 5m² at maturity stage of the crop. Collected data were statistically analyzed using a standard statistical procedure and differences among treatments were adjudged by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

It may be concluded that SRI method which is popularly known as Madagascar technology i.e., use of wider spacing (40cm×40cm), tender aged seedlings (8-12 days) and lower planting density i.e., one seedling hill^-1 could not show better performances over the method of rice cultivation as recommended by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. One the other hand, it was drudgery for uprooting and transplanting of tender aged and shorter seedlings. Moreover, it requires more labor for seedling uprooting, high management for land preparation for transplanting and cautious water management in the earlier growth stage of rice to avoid seedling damage.
