Effect of Water Management and Sowing Date on Boro Rice Cultivation by Drum Seeder

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the research field of BRRI farm, Gazipur during the Boro season, 2006-07. The rice cultivars were used as BRRI dhan28. This experiment was also carried out with three irrigation treatments and four sowing dates. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.5m × 4.5m. Sowing dates were in main plot and water management treatments were in sub plot. Yield and yield components of BRRI dhan28 are showed that effective tiller per m² was varied from 275 to 301. Statistically significant different by sowing date were observed on effective tiller per m² and sterility percentage. But filled grain per panicle and grain yield were not significant different. The highest number of effective tiller per m² (301) was found in 31st December sowing (S₃). Filled grain per panicle was highest in 16^th January sowing (S₄). In case of water treatment, effective tiller per m², filled grain per panicle and grain yield were statistically significant different. Only sterility per cent were not significant different. The highest number of effective tiller per m² (304) and grain yield (5.04 t/ha) was found in irrigation at 3 days after disappearing of standing water (I₂). Due to long term cold days it may happen. Growth duration varied from 132 to 155 days. Early sowing plant required more days to mature. Relative Water Supply was more than 1 in all water treatment I₁. The highest water productivity (6.52 kg/ha-mm) was obtained from 31^st December sowing and irrigation at saturation level. Minimum water productivity gave the treatment of 1st December sowing and continuous standing water (S₁I₁). From the two years study, it is seen that during Boro season 31st December sowing give the highest yield. Water productivity was also highest in the same sowing date. But, it is two years study. More study needed to be confirmed the result.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the research field of BRRI farm, Gazipur during the Boro season, 2006-07. The rice cultivars were used as BRRI dhan28. This experiment was also carried out with three irrigation treatments and four sowing dates. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.5m × 4.5m. Sowing dates were in main plot and water management treatments were in sub plot. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulfate, respectively. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in four equal splits at 25, 40, 55 and 65 days after sowing (DAS). Irrigation water applied, rainfall data S&P rate was measured as per same as Aman season.
