Dr. M A Rashid
CSO and Head
Irrigation and Water Management Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701, Bangladesh

The experiment was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur during T Aman, 2006 and Boro 2006-07. Data was collected on soil texture, bulk density of the soil, water status, rainfall, soil moisture content, variety and yield. Total water supply was recorded for determination of water requirement. Irrigation water was supplied after 3, 4 and 5 days of disappearing of standing water. Soil moisture content was measured everyday after disappearing of standing water until next irrigation. Soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depth. Treatments were-T1 = Daily soil moisture measurement for 3 days after disappearing of standing water, T2 = Daily soil moisture measurement for 4 days after disappearing of standing water, T3 = Daily soil moisture measurement for 5 days after disappearing of standing water,  T4 = Continuous standing water (5-7 cm). The soil moisture content in rice field after disappearing of standing water for the two seasons for the plots of treatments T1, T2 and T3 . The moisture content was expressed in percentage of oven dry soil on weight basis. During T. Aman season, the average soil moisture content (average of 3 treatments) were 53.9%, 51.0% and 49.2% after 1st, 2nd and 3rd day of disappearing standing water, respectively, at a soil depth of 0-15 cm and the corresponding soil moisture for the depth of 15-30 cm were 53.7%, 51.5% and 49.2% respectively. So, the soil moisture depletion rate per day was 2 – 3%. Frequent rainfall during T Aman season caused standing water in the plot which stopped collection of soil sample on 4th and 5th day of disappearing standing water. In Boro season, the average soil moisture content at a depth of 15 -30 cm were 54.6%, 51.6%, 47.3%, 43.4% and 38.8% after 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th day of disappearing standing water, respectively and the moisture content for the soil depth of 15-30 cm were 48.3%, 44.6%, 40.6%, 36.5% and 35.5% after 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th day of disappearing standing water, respectively. So, in Boro season the soil moisture depletion rate per day was 3-5%. The moisture content of bottom layer was slightly lower than that of the upper layer.
