Effect of Sowing Date on the Incidence and Severity of Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted at ARS, BARI, Burirhat, Rangpur with BARI Sarsa-14 during rabi 2012-2013 to determine the suitable sowing date to escape the severity of Sclerotinia stem rot (white mould) disease . The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. The plot size was 2.5m x 2m. The sowing dates were: 21 October (T₁), 1 November (T₂), 11 November (T₃), 21 November (T₄), 1 December (T₅) and 11 December (T₆). Data on disease severity and per plot seed yield were recorded. Per hectare yield (tone)) was computed on the basis of plot yield. From the results it was observed that the pathogen infect the crop at 65 to 70 days in age (pod formation stage). The highest per hectare seed yield with lower disease severity were recorded from 1 November sown plots followed by 11 November. So, 01 November to 11 November was the suitable sowing time of mustard to escape the severity of Sclerotinia stem rot disease with maximum seed yield.

Objectives:

This experiment was conducted to determine the suitable sowing date to escape the severity of Sclerotinia stem rot of Mustard

Methodology:

The field study was conducted at Agricultural research Station Burirhat, Rangpur with BARI Sarisa-14 during rabi 2012-2013. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. The plot size was 2.5m x 2m. The spacing was 40 cm x 10 cm. line to line and plant to plant within the line. The sowing dates were: 21 October (T₁), 1 November (T₂), 11 November (T₃), 21 November (T₄), 1 December (T₅) and 11 December (T₆). The crop was allowed to grow under natural infection condition. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. The incidence and severity of diseases were recorded according to Bakr et al. (2010) as follows: 0= no disease; 1= less than half stem girdled; 2= more than half stem girdled; 3= whole stem girdled and 4= plant dead. Data on per plot seed yield were recorded and per hectare yield (tone)) was computed on the basis of plot yield. The recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out the level of significance and the variations among the means were compared following least significant difference at 5% level.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of this experiment are presented in table 1. On 21 October sown plots, the stem rot disease appeared at 10 December. On 01 to 21 November sown plots, the disease appeared at different dates of January. On December 01 to 11 sown plots, the disease appeared at February. The lowest disease severity was recorded on 21 October sown plots and the highest on 1 December sown plots. The highest per hectare seed yield with lower disease severity were recorded from 1 November sown plots followed by 11 November and 21 November sown plots, respectively. The highest disease severity with lower seed yield was recorded from December 1 and 11 sown plots. It was also observed that the pathogen infect the crop when it was 65 to 70 days in age (pod formation stage). It has been reported that rapeseed-mustard is prone to Sclerotinia stem rot infection during pod formation stage. From the results of the present study it may be concluded that 01 November to 11 November was the suitable sowing time of mustard to escape the severity of Sclerotinia stem rot disease with maximum seed yield.
