Efficacy of Fungicides in Controlling Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Mustard.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field study was conducted at Agricultural Research Station Burirhat, Rangpur with BARI Sarisa-14 during rabi 2012-2013 to select the effective fungicide to control Sclerotinia stem rot of mustard. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications and the test fungicides were Indofil M-45 (Mancozeb), Tilt-250EC (Propiconazole), Contaf (Tabuconazole), Ridomil MZ-68, and Rovral 50 WP (Iprodione). Data on disease severity and per plot seed yield were recorded and per hectare yield was computed on the basis of plot yield. From the results it was evident that spraying of Rovral 50 WP, Tilt 250 EC or Contaf reduced the stem rot disease severity by 90%, 69% and 69%, respectively and increased seed yield by 69%, 67% and 62%, respectively over control. However, the effect of Rovral, Tilt and Contaf was statistically similar on disease reduction and seed yield.

Objectives:

The present investigation was undertaken to select the effective fungicide to control Sclerotinia stem rot of mustard.

Methodology:

The field study was conducted at Agricultural Research Station Burirhat, Rangpur with BARI Sarisa-14 during rabi 2012-2013. The test fungicides were Indofil M-45 (Mancozeb), Tilt-250EC (Propiconazole), Contaf (Tabuconazole), Ridomil MZ-68, and Rovral 50 WP (Iprodione). The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. The individual plot size was 3m x 2m. Line to line spacing was 40 cm and plant to plant within the line spacing was 10 cm. Cowdung and NPKS fertilizers were applied to soil as per recommendation. The crop was allowed to grow under natural epiphytotic condition. Irrigation and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Spraying was started just after the onset of disease symptoms and was sprayed three times at 12 days interval. The incidence and severity of diseases were recorded according to Bakr et al. (2010). Data on per plot seed yield were recorded and per hectare yield was computed on the basis of plot yield. For recording data on yield contributing characters, 10 plants in each plot were randomly selected and tagged and harvested separately. The recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out the level of significance and the differences among the means were compared following least significant difference at 5% level

Achievement/Findings:

From the results it is evident that spraying of Rovral 50 WP, Tilt 250 EC or Contaf reduced the stem rot disease severity by 90%, 69% and 69%, respectively and increased seed yield by 69%, 67% and 62%, respectively over control. However, the effect of Rovral, Tilt and Contaf was statistically similar on disease reduction and seed yield. The effect of Indofil on disease reduction was statistically similar to Rovral but seed yield was significantly lower. However, Indofil gave significantly higher seed yield as compared to control. The effect of other fungicides against the disease was non significant over control. The number of siliqua/plant was the highest in Indofil treated plot (49.4). The highest number of seed/siliqua was recorded from Rovral treated plot (32.9) followed by Tilt and Contaf treated plots. These results are in accord with the findings of Anon (2010) who reported that the efficacy of Rovral against Sclerotinia stem rot of mustard is better than that of Bavistin (Carbendazim) and gave better disease reduction with higher seed yield.

From the results of the study it may be concluded that Rovral 50 WP (0.2%) was the most effective fungicide due to giving maximum disease reduction with the highest per hectare seed yield.
