Effect of Plant Growth Regulant on the Control of Tobacco (n/cot/ana Tabacum L.) Suckers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To find out the effect of plant growth regulant on the control of tobacco sucker, a study was conducted at the Tobacco Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur for three successive years, from 1977-78 to 1979-80. The growth regulants- Royal MH-30, urea, kerosine and coconut oil were used. The result showed that minimum number of suckers and highest yield of both green and cured leaves were recorded in the plots treated with Royal MH-30 closely followed by urea solution but it was not so easy to apply urea solution in each and every leaf axil by hand. The maximum number of suckers and lowest yield wer e produced ill the control plot. So in order to suppress the sucker development to tobacco, the growth regulant-Royal M H-30 is the most potent and easy to manipulate.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of different chemicals on the control of tobacco suckers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Tobacco Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur, Bangladesh for three years from 1977-78 to 1979-80. One promising variety of cigarette tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L) namely BAT-l was selected for the experiment. The experimental plotes were supplied with uniform application of 9238 kg cowdung, 68 kg urea, 104 kg T.S.P. and 90 kg sulphate of potash per hectare. The above fertilizers were applied at the time of final preparation of land then well mixed with the soil by ploughing and laddering before transplanting. The additional application of 40 kg of urea per hectare were also supplied to the crop as side dressing after one month of transplanting. Seedlings were raised in well prepared seedbeds and healthy seedlings were transplanted in the field in every year. Weeding and irrigations were done as and when became necessary. Care was also taken to control disease and insect attacks. The treatments were as follows:

A = Control (without suckering)

B = Royal MH-30

C= Urea solution

D = Kerosine oil

E=Coconut oil

The experiment was conducted according to the randomized block design with four replications. The size of the unit plot was 7.2 X 4.5 m. A spacing of 60 and 75 cm were allowed between plants and rows respectively. When about 50-60% of the plant showed one or more open flowers per head topping was done and all suckers from early maturing plants were removed by hand. The chemicals were applied to the plant within 24 h after topping. Solution of 6% Royal MH-30 was sprayed over the first half of the topped tobacco plant whereas the rest of the chemicals were applied in the leaf axil by hand. Data on average number of suckers per plant, green and cured leaf yield per plot were recorded for three successive years. All data were tabulated and combined for analysis and interpretation.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest average cured leaf yield of 8.0 kg per plot was recorded in the plots treated with Royal MH-30 closely followed by the treatment C (urea solution) but it took long time to apply urea solution in each and every leaf axil by hand. The minimum cured leaf yield was recorded under treatment A (control plots). So, Royal MH-30 is the only chemical which can safely be used for the control of tobacco suckers.
