Effect of Leaf Cutting on Grain Yield of Sorghum for Livestock and Poultry Feed in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) Site, Chabbishnagar, Rajshahi during the rabi season of 2000 and 2001 to study the effect of leaf cutting without hampering grain production of sorghum for minimizing fodder crisis in the area. Sorghum leaf cuttings were done at 3 stages e.g. before flowering, at the time of flowering and before the maturity of grain. Grain production reduced significantly for leaf cutting at the time of flowering. A total of 3.09 t/ha of sorghum leaf was obtained from the leaf cutting before flowering without hampering grain yield. However, from the results of the experiment, it may be concluded that the leaf cutting before flowering and before maturity of grain is the suitable time without hampering grain production for minimizing the feed crisis of livestock and poultry.

Objectives:

To know the proper time of sorghum leaf cutting without hampering grain yield

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) Site, Chabbishnagar, Rajshahi during the Rabi season of 2000 and 2001. The experimental soil was brown terrace, well drained, clay and slightly acidic in reaction (pH 6.1). The field was thoroughly ploughed and leveled prior to sowing. Fertilizer @ 60:22:60 kg/ha of NPK was applied at the time of final land preparation. The treatments were: T₁- leaf cutting before flowering, T₂ - leaf cutting at the time of flowering, T₃ - leaf cutting before maturity of grain and T₄ - no leaf cutting (control). The design was Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The individual plot size was 5m x 4m. The seeds (local variety) were sown @ 25 kg/ha on January first week in both the years following broadcasting method. The experiment was carried out under rain fed condition in both the years. The total rainfall was recorded during the crop growth in 2000 and 2001 as 2.1 and 1.5 mm, respectively. The total growth duration of sorghum was 115 days. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Thirty plants of uniform growth per plot were selected at random and tagged. Leaf was harvested from the lower part of the selected plant on the basis of their apparent maturity as much as possible at a time from all the treatments. The grain was harvested after maturity. Data were collected on yield and yield contributing characters and performed ANOVA with the recorded data. Least Significant Difference (LSD) was done to compare differences among the means. An economic analysis was also done.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings of the present study it reveals that the leaf cutting practice before flowering and before maturity of grain stage is suitable time to the farmers without hampering grain production of sorghum for minimizing the fodder crisis with extra advantage of grain.
