A Comparative Water Management Study for Direct Seeded and Transplanted Rice Cultivation-2007

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment were conducted to determine the yield performance of direct seeded and transplanted rice. The experiment was carried out with 4 different water treatments Viz: T₁= standing water, T₂ = irrigation was applied after 3 days of disappearing of standing water, T₃ = irrigation was applied after 7 days of disappearing of standing and T₄ = irrigation was applied after 10 days of disappearing of standing water. Two cultivation methods M₁ = direct seeded and M₂ = transplanted methods were practiced. The water productivity of direct seeded rice were 6.80, 7.14, 9.46 and 10.33 kg/ha/mm in treatments T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄, respectively. For the same water treatments, the water productivity of transplanted rice were 4.93, 5.01, 5.02 and 4.97 kg/ha/mm respectively. Finally the results revealed that in all the water treatments, water productivity of direct seeded rice were higher than that of transplanted rice. It is due to higher yield obtained from direct seeded rice than transplanted rice and less amount of water needed for direct seeded rice compared to transplanted rice.Direct seeded rice saved 81% water during land preparation and 24, 26, 16 and 19 % water during vegetative phage in treatments T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄, respectively compared to transplanted rice. On an average, 35% of water can be saved by direct seeded rice. Number of panicle per square meter of direct seeded rice was higher. Thus direct seeded rice gave higher yield than transplanted rice.

Objectives:

To quantify the total amount of water required for direct seeded and transplanted rice; and
To determine the yield performance of direct seeded and transplanted rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur in Boro season 2007. The experiment was carried out with 4 different water treatments Viz: T₁= standing water, T₂ = irrigation was applied after 3 days of disappearing of standing water, T₃ = irrigation was applied after 7 days of disappearing of standing and T₄ = irrigation was applied after 10 days of disappearing of standing water. Two cultivation methods M₁ = direct seeded and M₂ = transplanted methods were practiced. BRRI recommended fertilizer doses (262-90-150-112-11, kg/ha of Urea-TSP-MOP-gysum-Zinc sulfate) were applied for the experiment. V-Notch was used for measuring the applied water in different treatments. Water productivity were calculated by using the formula WP=Y/WR, Where WP= water productivity (Kg/ha/mm), Y= yield (Kg/ha) and WR= water supplied (mm) for the crop at field condition. Rainfall data was collected from the BRRI weather station. For estimation of grain yield, the whole cropped area was harvested, threshed, cleaned and weighed. The moisture was determined by a moisture meter and yield was expressed in kg/ha at 14% moisture level. For estimating panicle number per sqm, one sqm area from each plot was considered. For determining filled grain, 10 panicles were selected randomly from each of the one sqm harvested area. From each plot, 1000 grain weight was taken randomly and weighed them by an electrical balance. Plant height was taken from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. The straw weight was making after enough sun drying which is the usual practice of the farmers.

Achievement/Findings:

The percent of water saved by direct seeded rice over transplanted rice during land preparation was 81 in all the treatments. In vegetative phase, water saved by DSR was 24, 26, 16 and 19 in treatments T₁, T₂_, T₃ and T₄, respectively. The over all water saved by DSR compared to TPR were 27, 30, 36 and 47% in treatments T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄, respectively and the average was 35 percent. Though treatments T₃ and T₄ saved maximum amount of water than T₂, but the yield losses in this treatment was higher than T₂. Therefore, T₂, which was maintained at irrigation, was applied after 3 days of disappearing of standing water could be the best water treatment for rice production.Number of panicle per square meter and plant height of direct seeded and transplanted methods of rice cultivation were recorded. Panicles per square meter for direct seeded rice were 372, 362, 341 and 298 and of transplanted rice were 328, 252, 235 and 243, respectively. The plant height in direct seeded rice were 89, 88, 87 and 84 and in transplanted rice were 87, 87, 82 and 80 in treatments T₁, T₂, T₃ and T₄, respectively.From the results it is evident that number of panicles in DSR are higher in comparison of TPR. Similarly the plant height of DSR is higher compared to TPR.
