Effect of Frequency of Watering on the Growth and Yield of Two Selected Strains of Reishi Mushroom

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different frequencies of watering were applied on the spawn packets of two selected strains of reishi mushroom. Significant variation was observed on the yield contributing characters and yield of Ganoderma lucidum-1 and Ganoderma lucidum-2 by different frequencies of watering. Days required to antler initiation, days required to conk formation, days required to first harvest, length of stem, diameter of stem, diameter of pileus and thickness of pileus of both strains were significantly influenced by the different frequencies of watering whereas the number of fruiting body of both strains were not influenced significantly. The highest biological yield, biological efficiency and dry yield were recorded in Ganoderma lucidum-2 which was statistically similar to Ganoderma lucidum-1, when water was sprayed thrice a day and the lowest biological yield was recorded in Ganoderma lucidum-2 when frequency of watering was once a week. The biological efficiency and dry yield was increased with the increase of frequency of watering but decreased abruptly with the increase of watering more than thrice a day.

Objectives:

To justify the performance of reishi mushrooms under the different frequencies of watering.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the National Mushroom Development and Extension Centre, Sobhanbag, Savar, Dhaka during the months of April to August 2008. Two selected strains of reishi mushroom such as V₁ : Ganoderma lucidum-1 and V₂ : Ganoderma lucidum-2 and seven frequencies of watering viz. T₁ : Once a week; T₂ : Twice a week; T₃ : Every alternate day; T₄ : Once a day; T₅ : Thrice a day; T₆ : Five times a day and T₇ : Five times a day with cloth covering for maximum moisture contained were used as treatments. The substrates of spawn packets were prepared by using saw dust and wheat bran at the ratio of 2:1. Water was added to make the moisture content 65% and CaCO₃ was added at the rate of 0.2% of the total mixture. Polypropylene bags of 7 ? ×10? size were filled with 500g of substrate mixture and their mouths were plugged by inserting water absorbing cotton with the help of plastic neck. The bags were autoclaved at 121 ºC and 15 psi for 2 hours. After autoclaving and cooling, the bags were inoculated with the mother culture of Ganoderma lucidum-1 and Ganoderma lucidum-2 at the rate of 1-2 teaspoonfuls per packet separately. After inoculation, the packets were incubated in the laboratory at about 25±2 ⁰C temperatures. After completion of mycelium running, spawn packets were opened by square sized (1×1 cm) cut on the single side middle abdomen of the packet and transferred to the culture room at 30-35 ºC and 85-95% relative humidity. Water was sprayed on the spawn packets according to the treatments. Biological yield, in g/0.5kg packet was recorded by weighing the whole fruiting bodies without removing the lower hard and dirty portion. The experiment was laid out following completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Data on days required to antler initiation, days required to conk formation, days required to first harvest, numbers of fruiting bodies, length of stem, diameter of stem, diameter of pileus, thickness of pileus, biological yield, dry yield and biological efficiency were recorded. Data were analyzed followed by Gomez and Gomez using MSTAT-c computer program. Means separation were computed following Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the same computer program.

Achievement/Findings:

This experiment revealed that the maximum biological yield, biological efficiency and dry yield were recorded in Ganoderma lucidum-2 strain when the frequencies of watering were thrice a day. But the performances were abruptly reduced with the increases of frequencies of watering more than thrice a day. Besides, poor performances were exhibited in both strains when the frequencies of watering were gradually decreased less than thrice a day. So, it may be concluded that Ganoderma lucidum- 2 strain may give maximum production under the three times per day frequencies of watering.
