Development and Release of BRRI Dhan47 for Coastal Saline Zone of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI Regional station Satkhira in Boro season. The aim of this study was to develop and release of salt tolerant Boro rice variety for coastal saline zone of Bangladesh. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line IR63307-4B-4-3 as saline tolerant Boro variety, BRRI dhan47 for saline prone area in 2007. Plant height of the variety is 105 cm with 152 days growth duration. Average yield is about 6.0 t/ha and grain size is medium bold. The variety showed >1.0 t/ha grain yield advantage over BRRI dhan28. The variety is tolerant to salt stress of EC 12-14 dS/m at seedling stage and can complete life cycle at 6.0 dS/m.

Objectives:

To develop salt tolerant Boro rice variety for coastal saline zone

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur and BRRI Regional station Satkhira in Boro season. This variety was developed through introduction from IRRI, Philippines. It is an IRRI developed line with pedigree IR63307-4B-4-3 (IR51511-B-B-34-B/TCCP266-2-49-B-B-3). After collecting the genotypes, several experiments were conducted in saline coastal zone of Bangladesh. This genotype was also selected through an alternative approach participatory varietal selection (PVS) under a mother-and-baby trial with active participation of farmers. Salt stress screening of the genotype was done under controlled conditions at seedling stage under salt stress of 12-14 dS/m. The line was screened also for whole life tolerance to salt stress at 6.0 dS/m. Salinity was applied at transplanting and continued throughout the crop growth period. The line was chosen for the variety trials conducted at six salt affected locations i. e. Botiaghata, Kaliganj, Tala, Asasuni, Satkhira Sadar and the BRRI farm in Satkhira using BRRI dhan28 as check. The initial soil salinity of these fields (before irrigation) ranged from 8 to 12 dS/m. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan28. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line IR63307-4B-4-3 as variety.

The variety BRRI dhan47 is recommended for cultivation in saline prone coastal zone of Bangladesh. This is first salt tolerant variety for Boro season.
