Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aus season during 1989-2008. The objective of this study was to develop and release of short duration and high yield potential with high amylose rice variety for T. Aus season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR5563-3-3-4-1 as BRRI dhan48 for T. Aus season in 2008. Plant height of the variety is 105 cm with 110 days growth duration. It is smaller than BR26 and flag leaves were much more vertical than BR26. Average yield is about 5.5 t/ha. Amylose content (26.4%) is higher than BR26 (21.8). Grain (Size and Shape) is medium bold type while BR26 has medium selender grains. Small awn may be present on the apical spiklets of the panicle. The prevalence of ShB in BRRI dhan48 is lower than BR26, the standard variety of T. Aus. It possessed natural ShB disease avoidance capacity which is lacking in BR26.

Objectives:

To develop short duration and high yield potential in combination of tolerance to lodging, high temperature, pre-harvest sprouting rice variety for T. Aus season

Methodology:

This study was undertaken at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aus season during 1989-2008. This variety was developed through hybridization. It is BR line with pedigree BR5563-3-3-4-1 (BR1543-9-2-1/IR13249-49-3-2-2). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (SYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety (s). Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done for On-farm evaluation of proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BRRI dhan26. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR5563-3-3-4-1 as variety.
