Effect of Variety and Seed Rate on the Yield of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with five varieties of wheat having varying seed sizes and with five seed rates at the Wheat Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Dinajpur during 2003-04 crop season to determine the appropriate seed rates. Higher grain yield was found in Shatabdi and Gourab, which are medium sized seeded varieties. The bolder seeded variety Prodip failed to produce higher grain yield due to lower number of spikes per unit area. Seed rate of 120 kg ha-t produced higher grain yield across all the varieties. For maximum (or optimum) yield, seed rate for varieties having medium to large sized seed i.e., Gourab, Shatabdi, Bijoy and Prodip might be 120 kg ha-t and that for the variety with small sized seed i.e., Sufi might be 100 kg ha^-1.

Objectives:

To determine the appropriate seed rates for different wheat varieties having varying seed sizes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of WRC, BARl, Dinajpur (88° 41' E and 25°38' N) during rabi season of 2003-04. The soil was under the AEZ 1 (Old Himalayan Piedmont). Two-factor experiment with five varieties and five seed rates was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The varieties were Gourab, Shatabdi, Sufi, Bijoy and Prodip. Thousand-grain weights of these varieties are 43-48,41-46, 35-40,45-52 and 53-58 g, respectively. The seed rates were 80,100, 120, 140 and 160 kg ha^-1. Unit plot size was 3x5m. The experimental plot received chemical fertilizers at the rate of 100-27-50-20-1 kg N-P-K-S-B ha^-1 from urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and boric acid, respectively. Two-third of urea and full amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal and the rest of urea was applied as top dressing at 21 days after sowing (DAS). Seeds of five varieties were sown on 1 December 2003 at the rate in accordance with the treatments. Seeds were treated with a systemic fungicide Vitavax-200 prior to sowing. Two irrigations were applied at 21 and 55 DAS. A weeding was done during 26-28 DAS. Plant population and tiller production were recorded at 16 and 47 DAS, respectively. Date of physiological maturity was recorded. Spike density, plant height and spike length were recorded at physiological maturity. Other yield contributing characters, and grain (adjusted to 12% moisture) and biomass (sun-dried) yields were recorded after harvesting. The data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Higher grain yield was obtained in medium sized seeded varieties Shatabdi and Gourab. Seed used at the rate of 120 kg ha^-1 produced higher grain yield across all the varieties. The seed rate might be 120 kg ha^-1 for varieties having large and medium sized seed i.e., for Gourab, Shatabdi, Bijoy and Prodip for obtaining optimum yields. Seed rate for Sufi, which has smaller seed, might be 100 kg ha^-1.
