Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aman season during 1995-2008. The aim of this study was to develop and release of short duration and high yield potential rice variety for T. Aman season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR6592-4-6-4 as BRRI dhan49 for T. Aman season in 2008 for the complementary variety of BR11 and supplementary variety to BRRI dhan32. Plant height of the variety is 100 cm with 135 days growth duration. Average yield is about 5.5 t/ha and grain size is medium slender. The grain type of this variety is fine as Nizersail brand and lodging tolerance which is lacking in Nizersail and BRRI dhan32. The variety is photo insensitive and one week earlier than BR11 but plant type similar to BR11.

Objectives:

To develop modern rice varieties for flood free environments with emphasis on earliness, good grain quality and yield potential superior to standard varieties for T. Aman season

Methodology:

This study was carried out at BRRI Gazipur in T. Aman season during 1995-2008. This variety was developed through hybridization. It is BR line with pedigree BR6592-4-6-4 (BR4962-12-4-1/IR33380-7-2-1-3). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (SYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety (s). Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done for On-farm evaluation of proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of BR11. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR6592-4-6-4 as variety.
