Development and Release of Premium Quality Rice BRRI Dhan50 for Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 1998-2008. The aim of this study was to develop and release of premium quality rice variety with earliness, good grain quality and high yield potential for Boro season. National Seed Board of Bangladesh has approved the recommendation of technical committee to release the proposed line BR6902-16-5-1-1 as BRRI dhan50 (Banglamati) for Boro season in 2008. Plant height of the variety is 82 cm with 155 days growth duration. Horizontal and long flag leaf exists below panicle. The variety is lodging tolerance which is lacking in Indian and Pakistani Basmati. It is photo-insensitive and one week earlier than BRRI dhan29. The variety showed higher yield (mean) with similar growth duration of BMDA Basmati. Average yield is about 6.0 t/ha and grain size is extra-long slender and premium quality rice with mild aroma. Export quality and fine grain as Basmati type of India and Pakistan. The amylose content of the variety is high (27.6%) and protein content is 8.2%. The proposed line is the 1^st HYV aromatic Boro rice with export quality grain type as Basmati.

Objectives:

To develop premium quality rice variety with earliness, good grain quality and high yield potential for Boro season

Methodology:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 1998-2008. This variety was developed through hybridization. It is BR line with pedigree BR6902-16-5-1-1 (BRRI dhan30/IR67684B). After fixation of the genotype, several experiments i. e. Observational Trial (OT), Preliminary Yield Trial (PYT), Secondary Yield Trial (SYT) and Regional Yield Trials (SYT) were conducted under on-farm and on-stations. Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trial (ALART) was conducted to evaluate of promising breeding lines for their adaptability in different agro-ecological conditions for releasing as variety. Finally the Proposed Variety Trial (PVT) was done in 10 location (BRRI HQ; Amla farm, BWDB, Kustia; Monirampur, Jessore; Satkhira Sadar; Jhinaidah Sadar; Chirirbandar, Dinajpur; Dinajpur Sadar; Niamatpur, Naogaon; Godagari, Rajshahi ; Nachole, Chapai Nawabganj) for on-farm evaluation of the proposed line by the NSB team for the recommendation of release as a new variety. The field evaluation team of the National Seed Board (NSB) compared the performance of this genotype with that of Basmati-386 and BMDA Basmati. The NSB has approved to release the proposed line BR6902-16-5-1-1 as variety.
