Correlates of BINAsail- Rice Cultivation and Some of the Attributes of Its Growers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Binasail is an improved T. Aman variety developed from an indigenous variety, Nizersail and released in 1987 by the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA). Since realease different extension agencies have been putting their efforts to diffuse the variety among the farmers. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent of cultivation of Binasail by the farmers in some selected villages of Mymensingh District. Data were collected from 100 randomly selected Binasail growers during September, 29 to October 29, 1997 by using a structured questionnaire. Majority (72 percent) of the Binasail growers had low to medium land coverage under Binasail in compare to other varieties. About one-fourth (28 percent) of the growers fell in high coverage category of Binasail rice cultivation. The level of education, farm size and knowledge about Binasail rice of the farmers had positive influence in the cultivation of Binasail rice. The existing communication campaign should be strengthened for further increase of coverage of land under Binasail rice cultivation.

Objectives:

1. To find out land under Binasail rice cultivation by the growers.

2. To describe some of the selected personal attributes of the Binasail growers.

3. To explore relationship between extent of Binasail rice cultivation by the farmers and their selected personal attributes.

Methodology:

Four villages such as Suhila, Boira, Sutiakhali and Dwaribari under Myrnenshingh district were the locale of the study. These four villages were selected randomly one from each of the four unions under Sadar Upazila of Mymensingh district. The 503 Binasail growers of these villages constituted the population of the study. Twenty percent of the farmers were selected following simple random sampling method as the sample size of the study (Kerlinger, 1973) the data were collected by interviewing the sampled Binasail growers throgh a structured questionnaire. The data collection took 30 days from September 29, to October 29, 1997. The area under Binasail rice cultivation was the dependent variable of the study. The age, level of education, farm size, attitude towards Binasail and knowledge on Binasail of the farmers were the independent variables. The dependent variable was measured by asking direct question to the farmers. The farmers were asked to mention the area they translated Binasail rice as well as other varieties of rice during the current Aman season. The amount of area under cultivation of Binasail and am rice varieties was expressed in hectare(s). The independent variables such as age, level of education and farm size were measured in terms of years, years of schooling and hectare ( s) respectively. The attitudes of the farmers towards Binasail rice was measured by using a 4 point modified Likert Type scale as suggested by Jha and Singh (1973). The knowledge of the Binasail growers on various aspects of Binasail rice cultivation was measured by using as set of questions. The farmers were asked twenty questions on Binasail rice cultivation and on the basis of their answer they were given credit. Attempt was also mad to compare the area covered under Bainasail rice and areas under their varieties of rice of the respondents. After collection, data were coded, complied and tabulated for statistical analysis and interpretation. The statistical measures such as number, percentage distribution, range, mean and categories were used to interpret the data. Correlation coefficient was computed to explore the relationship between the dependent end independent variables.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of above findings it can be concluded that the extent of dissemination of Binasail rice variety though moderate, still there is a scope to increase the area under Binasail cultivation. Because the variety possesses high adoption potentials to both resource-rich and resoource-poor farmers for increase of rice production of the country. Therefore, it may be recommended that the concern extension agencies should strengthen their extension activities by increasing number of demonstration activities, training of farmer, supply of adequate amount seed to the. farmers and focusing Binasail through mass media to motivate farmers towards its adoption .
