Rainwater Harvesting for Rice Based Crop Cultivation in Sonagazi Coastal Area -2007

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment were conducted to assess the opportunity of T.Aman and Rabi crop cultivation by using the stored rainwater. Sixteen percent of service (crop) area was considered for OFR. Six reservoirs were selected for rainfall and runoff collection at BRR farm, Sonagazi, which were previously constructed. Rainfall and storage were measured by rain gauge and staff gauge. Two types of OFR were used in the experiment as follows:FR₁ = Rainwater storage reservoir without embankment; andFR₂ = Rainwater storage reservoir with embankment. In RF₂, twenty five centimeter high embankment was constructed to store extra rainwater than that of the OFR capacity. Catchment area was considered to collect the runoff for both FR₁ and FR₂. Two inlets were provided in FR₂ to collect runoff. When FR₂ was filled up to the soil surface, then the inlets were closed. Daily evaporation and rainfall data were collected from BRRI (Sonagazi) weather station. OFR water level was measured every alternate day. In Aman season, BRRI dhan32 was cultivated under rainfed condition.The OFRs were located at the lowest elevation of the experimental land for maximum runoff collection. The incremental storage from rainfall and runoff contribution was determined by using curves. Thirty days old seedlings of BRRI dhan32 were transplanted with 20 cm x 20 cm spacing on 21 July and was harvested on 14 November. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 150, 100 and 70 kg of Urea, TSP and MP per hectare respectively. Fifteen centimeter high levee was maintained around each service area to conserve rainwater for fulfillment of water demand during the growing period. During the Aman season, total rainfall was 1038 mm. It was observed that there was no water stress in Aman rice due to rainwater stored in the rice field. The grain yield was 3.66 t/ha. From the analysis of rainfall and OFR storage, it was observed that at the end of December about 19 and 20.5 m³ stored water available in the FR₁ and FR₂_, respectively. There is a scope of short duration vegetable Rabi crops cultivation with 2-3 irrigation in the coastal saline area.
