Survey of Diseases of Lentil and Countrybean Germplasms and Field Evaluation of Promising Germplasm Lines Against the Selected Major Pathogens

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Survey on the occurrence of diseases, respectively on 600 and 140 germplasm lines of lentil and country bean and field evaluation of the selected germplasm lines to some major pathogens were observed under natural conditions in the performance trial plots of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department at BAU Farm, Mymensingh during rabi season of 1990-91. All together 13 diseases of lentil and 7 diseases of countrybean were recorded. Of all the diseases, anthracnose of lentil, and bacterial leaf spot and twig blight of country bean appear to be new records for the country. Disease reaction of selected lines of lentil to foot & root rot and bushy stunt pathogens showed that some were resistant under natural field conditions. Similarly, two lines, DS -30 and DS -52 of country bean were found resistant against anthracnose and cercospora leaf spot pathogens under natural field conditions. ArtificiaI inoculation tests of these Iines against the test pathogens are suggested to test their exact field resistance potentials.

Objectives:

To observe the diseases of lentil and countrybean germplasms and field evaluation of promising germplasm lines against the selected major pathogens

Methodology:

Expe riment 1. Survey on the occurrence of various diseases of lentil and countrybean in the field The occurrence of various diseases of lentil and countrybean were recorded, respectively on 600 and 140 germplasm lines in the performance trial plots of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department at BAU Farm, Mymensingh. Recording procedures and identification of diseases were made following the keys described earlier in the annual reports of the project (Anon., 1988; 1989). Experiment 2. Study on the reaction of germplasm lines of lentil to the selected major pathogens under natural field conditions The reaction of lentil germplasm lines was studied against foot & root rots (Sclerotium rolfsii and Fusarium oxysporum) and bushy stunt (Mycoplasma) pathogens in the performance trial plots of the Genetics and plant Breeding Department at BAU Farm, Mymensingh during the rabi-season of Survey of diseases of lentil of 1990-91. In this year 55 selected genotypes (22 early maturing, 13 high yielding and 20 large seeded) were included for this study. All the selected genotypes were sown on 25th November of 1990 in four replicated plots following randomized block design. Though the foot & root rot of lentil are two separate diseases caused by two different organisms, it is difficult to distinguish it symptomatologically in mass scale in the field, Therefore, these two diseases were considered here as single disease and designated as 'foot & root rot' of lentil. The prevalence of the diseases of lentiI were recorded following the procedures described in the earlier report (Anon., 1989) and finally the entries were graded following the standard 1-9 rating scare developed by ICRISAT (Nene et al., 1982). Experiment 3. Study on the reaction of germplasm lines of countrybean to the selected major pathogens under natural field conditions The reaction of countrybean lines was studied against three major pathogens viz. Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, Cercospora cruenta and bean common mosaic virus causing anthracnose, cercospora leaf spot and bean common mosaic diseases, respectively, in the performance trial plots of the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department at BAU Farm, Mymensingh, In this study, reaction of 12 selected germplasrn lines sown on 6th August of 1990 in six replications following randomized block design were determined following the procedures outlined by Fakir et al ( 1989 ).

All together 13 diseases of lentil and 7 diseases of country bean were recorded. Of all the diseases, anthracnose of lentil, and bacterial leaf spot and twig blight of country bean appear to be new records for the country.
