Herbal Treatment of Jaundice in Chittagong Hill Tracts by Chakma and Marma Tribes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tribal of Chittagong Hill Tracts is using medicinal plants of their surroundings for the treatment of different ailments from time immemorial. But this indigenous knowledge of herbal medicine is being lost day-by-day along with the development of communication and modem healthcare system in that region. We have made this attempt to document that knowledge before it is totally lost. Here, Ethno-medicinal information of 25 plants have been recorded which are known to be used for the treatment of Jaundice by the Chakma and Marma tribe in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh. Of all, 20 plants are reported for the first time, which are used in the treatment of Jaundice. Tribal name of the plants, mode of use and doses are described.

Objectives:

To the medicinal plants used for the treatment of different ailments.

Methodology:

We have carried out the study at different localities of Rangmati, Khagrachari and Bandarban district of Chittagong Hill Tracts. Information were documented through ethnobotanical data sheet by interviewing local tribal healers and elderly people and tried to verify in the field by repeated quarries in the same tribe and from other tribal healers as far as possible. Voucher specimens were collected and preserved at the herbarium of BCSIR Laboratories, Chittagong. Different publications were also consulted to verify the uses with the other reports. Plants are arranged alphabetically by their botanical name followed by family name and tribal name. The voucher numbers of the specimens are also noted after tribal name. The statements without voucher has been cited only when the vouchers were destroyed but the identity of the plants were established. Use pattern and dose also been mentioned where available. The abbreviation C and M are used for Chakma and Marma tribal name respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that leaf, root, rhizome and bark are the essential parts the tribal use for medicine. They use these in the form of juice, decoction, water extract, paste, tablet and poultice. Juice is used most commonly followed by pills and decoction. Metals and minerals are absent from their preparations. Out of 25 plants described here only five plants viz., Achyrenthes aspera, Cajanus cajan, Kalanchoe pinnata, Oroxylum indicum, Tephrotia purpurea are mentioned in more than one publications as to be used in jaundice. It is hoped that this information may provide some clue to the chemist and pharmacologist for more critical and comprehensive works in searching new medicine.
