Comparative Study on Root Morphology of Eighteen Long, Medium and Short Rotation Tree Species in the Nursery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighteen tree species of long, medium and short rotation were chosen to study the root system and morphology in the nursery. All the species were grown in the poly bag (10 cm x 15 cm) for three months and the roots were separated from the shoots and detail measurement was done. The highest root diameter (8.10 mm) among all the species was found for Tectona grandis. The longest tap root (36 cm) was found in Terminalia belerica and T. grandis had the shortest tap root length (11.83 cm). The highest dry biomass (2.75 g) was for T. grandis and the lowest was for Acacia auriculiformis (0.19 g). The roots of T. grandis had the highest volume (12.93 cm³) and Bursera serrata had the lowest (0.46 cm³). The root of A. auriculiformis had the highest number of nodules (68) and the lowest was that of Butea monosperma (13).

Objectives:

To know the root morphology of different species in nursery condition that extensively used for the plantation programmes.

Methodology:

The experiment was setup in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong. Seeds were sown in poly bags of 10 em x 15 cm in size and the potting media were a mixture of forest top soil and cow dung in a ratio of 3: l. The soil was left for few days to dry along with cow dung sieved to remove stones, roots and debrises before filling the poly bags. The soil-cow dung filled bags were placed in the nursery. Experiment was set up with Simple Random Design with three replications. Seedlings of eighteen species were grown in 540 poly bags. Seeds were sown directly in the bags and let to germinate and grow up to three months in the nursery. Three months old roots were carefully extracted from shoot and tap roots diameter, root length, green and dry weight, root volume and number of nodules were measured in the laboratory .

Achievement/Findings:

It was concluded from the study that in the early stage long rotation species had highest tap root diameter, length, biomass and volume but highest number of nodules was observed on the root of short rotation nitrogen fixing species. At the early stage most of the species had similar growth and development in most the parameters.
